What successful musicians have you met? Did meeting those musicians change your opinion about how you felt about them before you met them?

I met James Mercer of The Shins after one of there shows. I really just shook his hand and said hello. I also met Jim (guitar), Aaron (drums) and Tim (keyboadrs) of the band Grandaddy. They are very much as you might expect them to be, happy, laid back and very friendly, just like their music. That's pretty much it. |

I met Peter Noone of Herman's Hermits a few years ago at a free show in Boston... He seemed like a nice guy. -Tyler

i met patrick johansen (the drummer for ynwgie malmsteen) and was very nice and down to earth espeically when comparing him to the other members of the band i met bill frisell after a show once to get his autograph and he was very quiet, combined with how he plays on stage it makes him seem like a very eccentric i also met buckethead and he is very much like bill frisell

Since I've never heard of most of the people on these lists, I'm sure most of you have never heard of most of the people on mine... success is so relative too! Brad Turner (Canadian jazz trumpet player) - fun guy, tons of stories, hung out with a bunch of us local musicians, got really drunk Chase Sanborn (Canadian jazz trumpet player) - very business like, kind of serious to talk to. Very personable in his masterclass Phil Smith (principal trumpet, New York Philharmonic) - waaaay too religious. Seems like a really decent guy though Mike Murley (Canadian saxophonist) - don't remember. I don't think he had a lot to say... certainly wasn't demanding though Don Ross (guitarist... yeah, there's one you'll know!) - really nice guy. Very approachable and accommodating. David Braid (Canadian jazz pianist) - Very modest and quiet. Anton Kuerti (Canadian pianist) - very demanding, but not the asshole I was expecting (going by other's observations from previous visits). Del Vezeau (guitarist) - really nice guy... good negotiator! Andrew White (guitarist) - no comment, but hope he doesn't come back. Just missed... Bill Frisell - I was on vacation when he was here Jens Lindemann (world class trumpet player) - I was busy when he was here Peter Gabriel - he wasn't home when I was at Real World Bobby McFerrin - apparently really nice guy. Got restless with constant requests to sing "Don't worry, be happy", but kept his cool. I know a lot of local people who make a fairly successful living from being professional musicians and well known to the province (an island the size of England with a population of about half a million). Most are really nice people, but there are the assholes... mostly people who are on the edge of being successful, and ofcourse, one hit wonders. Rich |

haven't met him, but can't resist this story: He really seems like a guy who works with the things in front of him like they are play dough. I heard about a concert where he brought people (volunteers/random choices) from the crowd, taught them a vocalization each (little groups of 2's and 3's, I think), and then conducted them - pointed at each to prompt the sound, then the next, back to the first, on to another, got a whole string of melodies going - very cool. I did meet John Patitucci (spelling?) after a chick corea / herbie hancock concert about 20 years ago - came to the side of the stage and answered a bunch of questions. He had this thing about picking up little licks and stuff, phrasing, etc from other instruments - horn players, etc, he would listen to, to break out of his standard thing and learn more - pretty cool idea. pb |

| My biggest to me was Billy Corgan in Green Bay, WI. We were hanging with Jimmy Chamberlin's drum tech who got us into the show free of charge and we got a meet and greet w/ Billy after the show (this was in the Zwan years.. or year I should say) Also I met Pharrell Williams, my best buddy worked w/ NERD so I got to meet him at a show in Milwaukee. The night before that same show I got to hang w/ The Black Eyed Pea's band. Their drummer is a super nice dude. I had a beer w/ Chicago a few years back. Ani Di Franco came into my girlfriend's bookstore. I borrowed my snare stand to Butch Vig a month ago. I hung out with Jimmy Eat World in back of a venue once. I shook Bob Dylan's hand and told him I liked his suit. |
