Default Sting - Fortress Around Your Heart - Interesting Question

I've been listening to the song "Fortress Around Your Heart", by Sting, and something interesting "Struck a Chord" with me. Right before the music starts,
there's a sound that sounds somewhat like thunder. I wonder, what could that be? Is it a bomb? Is it a gun? Is it a synthesized explosion?

That sound could be anything. It actually reminds me of some lo-fi thunder a band I worked with wanted. For all I know it's a train wreck or a snare drum slowed down to one billionth of the normal speed. (btw, cymbals slowed down sound like WW2 planes).

This gets into sound design which is something I've never really done seriously but have monkeyed with here and there over the years.

Can you explain a little further what you mean? I wonder if anyone else might know what that would be?
