Default Put Your Time Into Tracking Your Recording...Not so much on mixing

*If your band is one a very tight budget, there is only way to record...with everyone playing at the same time. Just don't get in too big of hurry when tracking this way. To do another take, usually means less than 5 minutes of your recording time. To go in and edit out big mistakes and take much, much longer and cost you a lot more money.

Great advice, there are also some studios that are bringing back the art of 2 track recording - from the board direct to disk in stereo.

I remember recording off the floor with my old blues band. It was either that, or spend days in the studio trying to piece together the individual tracks to reveal any kind of chemistry within such a free style of music. I think it really depends on the genre, when I put together my studio in the fall and start recording (and learning how to USE the equipment haha) I'm going to definately piece it together individually. Yes, I would be laying down all/most of the tracks myself - however even if I had a band, I'd want to do this anyway. My solo stuff is more kind of pop-funk-rock (jack johnson meets john mayer apparently), which often calls for individual attention on an instrument's track.

I guess, in short, my opinion is that if there's band chemistry you want to capture (whether its because of the genre or the group itself) then you're going to probably do it off the floor - and if you want to bring out each track a little better, then individually.

I'm favorful for both

we're not saying that the instruments shouldn't be isolated, just that the performance should be as in rehearsal or at a show - with all people playing together.

Opening up space in your song arrangement
makes a TON of difference in how easy or
hard your mix will be.

Take Care,
