Basically, it's software in which you can take a short sample of sound, say a drum pattern, and stretch it out for as long as you need it. You can drop other "acidized" loops into your mix and they will be in the same key and tempo as your original. Loop based, means you're primarily, if not exclusively, using sound loops instead of "live" recordings using mics or analogue inputs.

You can do loop based recording without using Sony Acid products. I use Sonar and it works for me.
