Default Not to sound like a noob..

I just noticed the "Rate this Thread" option. I have noticed the star rating next to each of our posts, but I always just assumed that was automatic based on how many "likes" the post got.

Sorry I have not been rating any of the mixes I've listened to and commented on up until now (aside from "liking" them). I'll get on that now!

Oops lol. Yeah, some people don't rate mixes.
$10 Axe-Fx reamps. World class guitar tones are only a couple clicks away.

I used to not rate mixes because i thought (i still think) I don't have enough knowledge to RATE anybody's mixes but i can surely put forward my opinion about the mix. But due to the nature of this competition i started rating mixes. If i had a choice i would still not rate mixes . . The day i will think that i have acquired enough knowledge about what all goes in a good mix i will start rating the mixes wholeheartedly .

I think the Sweet 16 is the top 16 rated mixes (it's all explained somewhere but I feel too lazy to look for this evening).

So, if you want to go into it, enter the contest the very last minute and rate 5 stars to your mix

That is something I would dare say that most (if not ALL) of us think. At the end of the day, you have enough knowledge to know if YOU think something sounds good or not and if YOU like it and what you do or don't like about it. That's all you need to say. If you are not sure of the technical aspects about a possible solution to a problem, that's cool, maybe even say so. I would rather be told about something you think is an issue with my mix, even if you are not sure how to fix it, than have it sit there like a piece of food on my face that I didn't know was there (mixing metaphors and what not here....)
The levels of experience are so varied here. I have been 'recording' for 15 years, yet 12 of those revolved around putting a mic in front of the thing I wanted to record, then mixed the levels and that was it! The last three years I have spent a lot (A LOT) of time learning the trade and kicking myself that I did not start earlier. It is formums and comps like this that will speed up your learning non end, yet you have to be willing to voice your opinion and accept the opinions of others.

To put some perspective, there is one guy on this forums who seems to think the way I do (Hey Josh!), his mixes are similar, his critiques are similar and his sense of humour is just as bad too! Having said that, I have also discovered a member here who's opinions are almost 180 degrees opposite of mine when it comes to critiquing mixes. That's just the way it is.

It is doubtful you will EVER feel ready, so to hell with it, jump on in and let's see if you can swim (more metaphors!). This place is wonderfully supportive and respectful, so someone will drag your drowning ass out should you get in trouble!

Therefore, I look forward to your honest and detailed critiques of my mixes in the future!

Rules do not belong in music. Like food, there are flavours that work well together, but in the end, it's each person's taste that determines the quality of the meal.

everyone should have an opinion. it is greatly encouraged because we are all listeners. if you don't think you have enough technical knowledge then critique it like a common listener. ultimately it boils down to one important part: does the common listener like the song or not?

an opinion could be 'wrong' and it could be 'right'. if it is 'wrong' then don't make the same mistake again. if it is right, use it as a base to continue learning. the greats always emphasize the fact that they are life-long learners. so we should do the same.

A whole lot of dudes/chicks think they have to run a 4 minute mile before they can have an opinion. This music thing has nothing to do with those kinds of standards. If you hear a mix that sounds mega badass, give it a 5. We all know when a mix feels good. It occurs when the music is more effective. This is a subjective thing and that's all part of the fun. It's easy to over think this.

Knowing the technical solutions to problems is the hard part. New guys won't be so good at this. Most of us still could learn a few billion tricks in this category. Just do your thing and try to help when you can. Others will reciprocate.

You can't as the last day is the last day of the month but people can vote for 2 more weeks so this doesn't happen
