    Default November- rules and downloads

Band: Boz Millar/Jayson Brooks Duo Extravaganza
    Website: bozrecords.com
    Song: New Skin
    BPM: 140
    Key: Am?

    Boz's Tips
There are a lot of tracks to work with. I think people need to not be afraid to pull stuff out. Insturmentaly, I didn't have any big inspiration for doing tracking what I tracked. When I tracked it, I added as many tracks as I could without breaking it, then added a few more. There should be no obligation to keep everything in there.

    Brandon's Thoughts
I wanted a contest in which all mixes were CLEARLY different. There's a video on Katy Perry's production of Teenage Dream where Dr. Luke (the producer) is talking about how they have 160 tracks or whatever. Then you hear the song and they have two. Whoever mixes those kinds of tracks is doing a lot of muting. Good. We wanted to do the same thing here. It's not a "remix" contest, but it's your job to find a song in there and bring it out. If you leave all tracks in, it will sound like shit. That's by design.

    Contest Rules
You can find all rules for the entire Slate Digital Cup here: Rules, Details, Prizes, Questions, and Comments

That's the place to go if you have any general questions.

    Deadline
Last day to enter is the last day of the month. More details.

    Downloads
There are multiple zip files. I've done this because it reduces upload errors.

File #1 - You'll have to go through the Slate propaganda for this month (only 3 questions) to download this essential zip file here.
    File #2 - Vocals
    File #3 - String Pads
    File #4 - Guitars Processed
    File #5 - Guitar DI

Just a heads up guys - I'm guessing the drum room mic is actually mono, because flipping the phase on either the L or R track completely cancels the other out.

I could be wrong here, but the way I see it, only the drum files are 16bit - the others are 24bit.

Now that you mention it I see the Vox and Guitar_DI and a couple of the Strings/Pads are 24-bit. All the rest are 16-bit. Damn, brought them all into the Pro Tools session as 16-bit since I thought they'd all be the same bitrate.

What are the drum samples you used on this, Boz? They sound very, very good.

I took the liberty to not bother upconverting the ezdrummer samples to 24 bit, since they are 16 bit samples to begin with. The vocals and especially the DI guitars I kept at 24 bit. You might as well just make it a 24 bit project.

The name of the song is New Skin.

If anything is messed up, blame Boz. Ruprect tossed them all in Cubase and they worked so we ran with it. I definitely didn't comb through them with a fine-toothed comb, but Cubase doesn't bother me about such trivial matters as bit depths.

Youre making the propaganda too easy. i didnt even have to read the article, and got it on the second guess. i think if SS is good enough to donate their products the contestants should be pretty much forced to read the propaganda. At the very least dont tell them which one they missed. just a mans opinion..

Bits, bytes, butts...should be able to deal with it. Watching Dropkick Murphys on Palladia and eating Halloween candy as I download, so all is right in the world. Looking forward to working with the tracks. Thanks, Boz!

Oops. Yep. My bad. They're the same on the file I uploaded. I think we'll all survive.

Unless you guys want the other room mic. I'm not sure how much of a logistical pain that would be.

I'm excited to see how people interpret these tracks. I'm hoping the overabundance of tracks to work with makes it so each submission sounds different. So far the only other one I've heard is fhumble's and it sounds very different than mine, so it looks like we're off to a good start.

I already know where I want to take this song, but since I haven't downloaded the tracks yet I have no idea if I will stick with that. That track just has an epic vibe, I may do 2 versions

That job was outsourced to Ruprect because I absolutely hate it. There ain't NEARLY as much propaganda out there as I had hoped. Feel free, willj, to submit questions for next months contest.

Ha! More like "sense of mismanagement". It always gets a bit hairy when there are 3 contests going on at once. It chews up Brandon's RAM a bit more than I'd like it to. So far no one has died so I'm content.

I loved the instrumental version you did of this track.
[Evil genius rubbing his hands together.]Good.........good.

I can't to see how many males-who-like-noises ruin this song because they can't ignore the titillation of all those cool tracks. I don't think I actually got this through to my brain since this year. Now I just mix like a girl. That's what I call it. The manly mixes won't work this month.
