Default What Kind Of Piano Is This?

Hi there, all you Fellow Music Members.
I was wondering, are any of you good with identifying the sound characteristics of different acoustic pianos? Well, here's a song that I found not so long ago. This is an instrumental jazz rendition of the classic song, "Wichita Lineman", and I'm wondering what kind of piano is played in the song. I can't seem to tell whether it's an upright, a grand, or a baby grand. And I can't seem to tell whether it might be a Steinway, a Bosendorfer, a Baldwin, a Yamaha, a Mason and Hamlin, or even an August Forster. Can you tell what kind of piano this is? And where can I find a sample library containing this kind of piano?

Default Re: What Kind Of Piano Is This?

I can't tell you what it is, and since the sound of a piano can be altered by so many things, I doubt anyone else here can either, but its most likely a Steinway model D since that is the generally favoured piano for jazz. I'd be extremely surprised if it was a Yamaha, August Forster or Bosendorfer, and I really have no idea what a Baldwin sounds like. Never even heard of Mason and Hamlin. At the end of the day, it could be anything!

There are numerous libraries that have several different pianos to suit your needs. The newest is East West's Pianos (with a Yamaha C7, Steinway D, Bosendorfer 290 and Bechstein D280), also Synthology's Ivory (with a Yamaha C7, Steinway D and Bosendorfer 290), Native Instruments Akoustic Piano (with a Steinway D, Bosendorfer 290 and Bechstein D280 and an upright).

I wouldn't get hung up on the models... listen for the sound that they produce, but as a rule of thumb, Yamaha tends ot be on the bright side, Steinway middle of the road and Bosendorfer dark.
