The D112 has a 'tubbieness' in the low mids, while the 57 has a sharper presence in the 3-5kHz area.

The best scenario would be to try both mics and see which works best. If you don't have this option, try to have a listen to the sax player beforehand. Sometimes the alto sax can have a harsh, piercing sound.

In this case, avoid the SM57 because it will only accentuate this sharpness. Go for the D112 instead.

Conversely, if the player is a bit dull sounding, the SM57 can bring out some clarity.

From here on, it's all about capturing the performance.

Yes, be careful with a 57 here. It could also accentuate mechanical sounds from pads or former-pads or lever-clack,especially if the sax is overdue for a lube-and-stuff job.

+1 for Duggie and Freddy! Excellent detailed info on the in's and out's of using either mic on a sax. These would be my last choices for recording a sax, but since those are the card you've been dealt, you got some good advice on how to play your hand.

It's also a good example of knowing mic characteristics and understanding which mic to choose in a given situation.

I had really good luck with a Sennheiser MD405 on a fairly bright tenor the other day. KSM32 was a close second but not right for the song.
