I also play guitar, but I've never tackled the bass; however, it doesn't look that difficult to do.
On the contrary.

I'm not a bass player, but I've recorded enough to know that mastering bass is TOUGH! I'm not really an SRV fan, per say, but imagine the magic he had in his hands. That's what it takes to be a hell of a bass player. Bass playing is a "feel" thing and most simply do not have it!

Now if you are just playing punk rock or whatever, it is pretty easy...if your timing is amazing!

I think the bass is one of those instruments that is easy to learn and hard to master. I mean, the concept is easy in terms of the notes played, but it is hard to play them right. Anyone can be a "bass player", but not many can be actually good at it.

Listen dudes. It's only as hard as YOU make it. End of discussion.

That is very very true. As in everything in life.

However, if you are suggesting that the bass is a simple instrument, you need to record with a major label producer just one song. The average bass player I record would take a day per song. I'm not kidding a bit. The ability to perfectly hit every down beat is very very rare. It takes amazing timing and most people simply don't have it. Odds are strong that if you haven't put in 1000s of hours with a metronome, you probably don't have it.

Yeah, don't let the four strings (Or more. There are such things as extended range basses, ya know.) fool you it is tougher than it seems. I have a metronome, but until about a week ago, I had not even turned it on! I had better get practicing. 1000 hours you say? That takes way too much discipline.
