Let's wax some nostalgia. What was the first instrument you ever owned? Renting an oboe from the local music store to play in 6th grade orchestra doesn't count. You had to have been the owner.
Mine was a mid 60's era set of Rogers Holiday drums in Red Onyx complete with the (in)famous Swiv-o-Matic tom holders. The sizes were 18" BD, 14" FT, and matching 12" RT's. The bass drum had a hole in the top of the shell someone plastered over (badly) with Bondo. The Swiv-o-Matic design was actually very good, but the holders were toast by the time I got ahold of them 20+ years past their prime. The bass drum pedal was an ancient Leedy strap drive that was missing the hoop clamp. The snare was a very early model Pearl that I traded in for a decent bass drum pedal after I found a Ludwig snare cheap at a yard sale. The cymbals were 12" Krut hi-hats that sounded like shit and a 16" Ludwig/Paiste Standard crash/ride/splash/china. I traded this kit even-Stephen for a Pearl Export that I thought looked more metal, but sounded cheesey. Come to find out my first drum kit is worth about 100 new Pearl Exports today due to the small "jazz" sized shells and twin rack tom holder that was very rare in those days. I tracked the kit down about 7 years ago only to find out it had burned up in a house fire. Curses! Lump

A Selmer clarinet. I still play in the school band, and I want to incorporate it into my rock music more.

Have you ever heard Bill Frisell? Weird music. He used a Bass Clarinet, which I now play (our school's getting a new one, thank god, mine's a piece of shit. In the words of my band teacher "This was here 30 years ago when I started, and it was most definitely not new or well made"). But anyway, it's pretty cool.
I'm working on incorporating more instruments into my music, because that's really what music is: playing whatever you got. So, I'm gonna start branching out, playing more stuff. It should be a lot of fun. -Tyler

My first real instrument (besides Flutaphone) was my Fender Squire Strat. I bought it used back in '96. Soon after that, my mom accused me of being on dope because I had saved a bunch of money up (I was 16 at the time and she was crazy). Anyway, I took black paint and wrote "my mom hates me" on it. It was pretty funny.

My first instrument was a fender squire bass guitar that my mom got me for christmas. I played STP all night long for weeks on end trying to learn to play. My grandma loved that!! She has only one good ear, because of a stroke she had when she was younger, she said that when she would hear me playing she would just roll over and sleep with her good ear to the pillow!!! Ah, good times!! I eventually traded it in for an alvarez acoustic electric at Mayberry music in Anna so that I could begin my writing career ;D
