Default last Minute Landmine

Hey folks,

Another stunning performance from Jetface, Cheers guys

Well here's my effort, hope it's somewhere near par.

I'm still unsure of an effect I threw in there but too late to change it now

Good mix! I like it.

The distorted drums in the middle part are a bit intrusive I think. The bass disappears at times, and at times one or two notes are resonant. Thats the sad part about many bass lines especially the ones made with synth. I try to avoid those resonances by dipping the frequency that corresponds to the resonant note, this lets you raise the volume of the bass so that the other notes can be heard better. The vocals are well done for me. The modulation you did to the synth in the musical part before the last choruses I personally don't like, but I am very minimal of those things anyway. The overall sound is good. There are no loose parts there everything is packed and works together.
Good job

I like it man. Its got all the right touches. i like that you got rid of the sibs on the vocals, but they might be a little too dark now. Still id much rather hear too dark than too sibilant
Love the touch to start off the second verse.

That snare could be a little bigger. its most noticeable in the choruses. Nice record scratch at the beginning of the solo. The solo and scratch could be a little louder. the rest of the stuff isnt doin much for me. Im not super familiar with this genre so it might be par for the course.

Nice job over all man!

Cheers guys,

Not really my genre either Will.
The "glitchly" stuff over the Virus track in the solo part was a toy I've had kicking around for ages. I did intend to strip some of it out as some bits seemed to work and others didn't but ran out of time.

After heavily compressing the room track I was trying not to over do the snare and seem to have under done it a bit to much.

IMO, I think the moog fights with the cello for each others place in the mix,I'm thinking some more hi-passing on the cello. IMO, the viris tends to be too dominating through the verses and over shadows the solo.
The drums too me are not conected with the rest of the mix. The kick and snare lack in level compared too the viris and get lost in the mix. The rythum section sould be holding there own and the rest of the tracks should be adding too them not covering them up. The solo too me got cheated cause the viris took the attention away from it cause it was doing a solo as well. Almost like there were two guy's with big heads and didn't want the other to out shine him so he stepped his way in to take the spotlight away. The one thing that I really like is the vocals and that snare should be matching them in tone and level.
After heavily compressing the room track I was trying not to over do the snare and seem to have under done it a bit to much.
You might want too check this out..Here are 5 of the top compression mistakes that I've come across over the years.

I think with some eging, better leveling of kick, snare, and viris you could move this mix to the next level.

Cheers for link, some great tips there that I'll have to try.

I don't think the compression was really my problem with snare. After I'd done the compression the snare sounded great, and huge, but I felt it was too loud.
So backed the level off and started to focus on it, backed it off more, focused on it again, backed it off more and so on. It's a problem that's caught me out before,
and something I really need to learn to deal with.

Cheers again

Typing as I listen, sounds pretty nice overall.
Vocals are very up front in the first verse, which is not a bad thing, but they then feel like they sit back again when the chorus kicks in. Personally, I fell that you have the choruses spot on, so perhaps bringing the vocals down a touch (not by much, a couple of db should be fine).
Distorted drums are a great idea. They are very distorted and lack some punch, so perhaps using a distortion bus and blended the original drums in would provide a little more impact. of course, that may not be what you were after at all.
Those warped synths and staccato bleeps were great. Best thing I've heard in that section yet! Really kept it moving and more importantly, they fit!
This is a really nice mix, and most of my comments and suggestions are merely personal preferences. The only thing I see that would need revision if I were the client, is the transition between verse and chorus to make that vocal not appear slightly smaller in the latter. Pretty darn good effort here my friend! Well done!

A lot of room noise on those drums, I like it.

The one thing that sticks out first off is the virus synth kinda buzzing in the center. Roll off some real highs and give it either some movement or throw a delay and\or verb under it that you can automate. It seems to open up a bit in the chorus but stays in the middleish area.

Vocals are good.

Really everythings coming together well, and its a well put together mix. The weird stuff in the instrumental part took me off guard, not sure how I feel about that. With everything else sounding smooth I didnt feel it was called for in this mix; not sure what call you made on that if it was to do it for the sake of having a dj remix type thing or if you felt it was for the benefit of the song. Sometimes those things are awesome but if it ever feels or sounds forced, its probably not the route to take. It was cool though

Overall this was a great mix and everything was balanced and well put together. Double thumbs up from me!

I think adding a bit longer of a decay time to the kit could improve the way it sits with the held out instruments. Usually when I'm determining snare verb decay times I'll solo the snare drum>pump up my reverb send with it's longest decay time on the snare and begin pulling it down until the verb ends just as the next snare hit is struck. It really adds this cohesive element.

The stutters and zips in the bridge were stellar, I wish I was good at that kind of stuff. Hopefully some day I'll be there.

This was a wide and full sounding mix I especially liked the stuttering fx on the solo, that is one of the best effects so far this month! There are a couple of things I noticed. I think the mix lacks some clarity, I feel there are a lot of instrument competing in the same frequency register. There is sort of a fizzyness to the mix. I think the virus synth contributes to that, it's too loud for my taste, but then on the other hand I comment on that on almost all mixes so that might just be my personal preference. I'll be honest, I don't particularly like that part of the track... Therefore I also thought it was a bit strange to feature the virus synth melody during the solo too as you get to hear that melody enough throughout the song... But then the stutter fx started and that was awesome so I can see why you did that. Maybe you could have used the stutter fx more throughout the song and focused more on the solo synth during the solo. Just a thought... Overall solid mix

Cheers Guy's, your feedback's real important to me

This stutter thing seems to be getting some mixed reactions, even I'm unsure about it
As I said earlier, I meant to keep some elements of it and bin the rest but didn't think I'd get the chance to.

hey man the stutters are well done, i noticed that you were thinking about removing it i am glad you didn't. Thanks for the link as well. The vocals are sounding good as well. I agree that you could have afforded bringing up the drums especially the snare in the choruses. I do think also that you could have brought down the virus and up the solo synth on the solo section.

Ahah, it was a nice job, kudos for all your edits and creative things you brought

I agree that it is a bit odd to me that the lead synth was behind the virus track, a matter of taste I think.
I could say that you distorted drums really lack of impact. It contrasts too much with the undistorted drum for me. Try the danmanisa's trick to give them back.
I don't why but I felt that something was out of tune in the last chorus... dunno what specially, I guess some vocals tracks but I found it very distracting and weird to me

Anyway, great job, for sure!

Nice (gated?) reverb on the snare! Overall, a fairly well balanced mix.

Generally, I'm hearing a little low-mid muddiness buildup that is possibly coming from the vocals - perhaps high passing those more aggressively might have helped.

The drums feel a little "blunt" - perhaps a little too much compression/saturation? Maybe doing those things with a parallel arrangement might help to retain some of the transient impact of the drums.

Cool mix!

Hey Ed,
> Kool. I enjoyed the mix. I really like the vocal treatment. Great stereo field. Creative drums, a tad to much distotion, but good idea. The Virus synth needs some anti-biotics Ed. Pulling out some of the more harsh frequincies around 3k would do it for me.
>> Other that a few little things you have done a great job. Pulling down some 3k would also help your snare keep its presense in the chorus. Peace, Jojo
