Default Jeronimo Mora - It's July Somewhere In The World Mix

Yeah, It's gotta be July already somewhere in the world. This was truly a pleasure to work with. Thank you Brandon for the tracks. All my usual DaTube, Bricasti Shenanigans. I kept this mix straight forward, but not, at the same time. Referenced checked, excitement tested. I truly believe this one is ready for prime time.

    Jeronimo,
As with Willj I will need to hear the tracks (yet to be downloaded) to see what you've actually done, but what I hear sounds pretty good. From your prototype I imagine I will try to get a bit more excitement out of the saw wave synth. I liked your balance of the vocals, but I might suggest a tad more volume there. I hope to get mine to sound as good overall!

Nice job Jeronimo! Dude, you are speedy gonzalez, aren't you?

The mix sounds cool - punchy & large musically.

I have to agree with the Bob's comment on the vocals needing a bit more level in the mix - also, they could do with a little more "fairy-dust" up in the high end - probably a subjective comment, that one, but it does seem the the glossy top end of pop vocals seems to be a defining feature.

One other thing I noticed was that the mix has a general "grittyness/hairyness" about it (yeah, dumb description, I know) - There seems to be some saturation across the whole mix that (to me) would be more suited to an indie-rock type thing - I had an inkling about it on my studio monitors, but it became very apparent on a small computer 2.1 system. It's not nasty or anything, just a fairly subtle thing that is again, probably more subjective than anything.

Anyway props to you for getting it done in double quick time - I assure you, if I did the mix as quickly as you, it would sound pretty terrible. Top job!

Thanks man! Not sure about the grit, but there was a large amount of saturation on the drums, specifically.

Pretty awesome that you churned this out this fast!

Needs more TLC, though, I think. Listen to the transition you added at 0:48 for example. You have a big "whoosh" into... buried vocals. The need to be turned down and the vox turned up. Also, your vox don't quite sound like dance pop, to me. I think you needed to be a LOT more aggressive with cutting some of the lows out of them. There's a lot of vocals and they sound kinda cloudy/jumbled as opposed clear & shiny.

So, your mix sounds better than mine would have had I done it as quickly as you did yours (I need breaks and time to think about where I want to go with it).

But it's not a race, so you only get a few bonus points for being first.

Ha. Thanks. I don't think there was too much low end, I high passed a lot. I think the problem might have been that there wasn't enough high end because I was too rough with de-essing. Just so people know, I didn't rush it. I just started as soon as it was released. It came together in a quick fashion.

    Thanks !

I'm not saying you did rush it. But you were first. And you didn't sleep on it and give it another go the next day, I don't think. :P Invariably the next day I realize I hate some of my mix decisions. Maybe your brain is less flawed than mine.

I wish there was a "bowing" emoticon. Seriously. Great mix man. I liked the creative additions such as the swell.

This whole mix is incredibly punchy, tight, and smooth. It's hard to try to critique this mix because my mix isn't even close to this right now. I'm super impressed. It feels like you made some executive decisions and I think really turned out well. Its balanced in it's unbalance (not trying to make each track a focal point at all times. )

I got lost on the vocal a couple times, but that was really it.

    You're destined for big things.

First of all, Gret mix! big and always keeping interest! .. I think that, at least from my point of view, the drums could use less reverb, specially on the kick drums and one of the percs, it causes for the kick to loose a little and I think in this case it needs to be in all it's mighty glory all over the mix. But that's just my personal point of view, other than that, great work, as always!

I didn't add any reverb to the kick drum. The room mic is to blame for that, but I get your point . Thanks!

    Did you forget the moog
It's really invisible .... almost, in the mix.
Vocals are way to quite, and full.
And the mix is pretty darn good. Except heavy reverbed.

You posted this up so fast I didn't even seen it until today.

feeling your groove on this. the drums are rocking and the whole place is hopping. (hopefully not on a landmine) i am not crazy about too much high end and like a dark mix but i did find that these vocals could have used a little more up there in the chorus. the synths cut through so well that they take over the show and leave the vocal in second place. really like the room ambiance you have given the drums, in fact i really enjoy your percussion mixing on this overall. really a solid mix as usual.

Good mix! Very detailed. Great space you have created. I have two comments. I feel the chorus is softer than the verses, maybe the master compression is to blame. That's rather common on mixes here but I feel it ruins some of the impact of a track... The other comment is that the track feels a little messy, there is a lot going on and with all the distortion it adds up to a pretty thick sound. But no doubt this is a great mix

Nice, man - especially for as quickly as you got it done! You did a nice job of controlling the low end on the kicks and bass, but I'd like to hear a little more mid/high-mid growl out of the bass - Moog basses have always been know for that (had a keyboard player friend years ago with an original MiniMoog and it sounded awesome on bass lines)

You made some nice arrangement decisions (although I haven't been a big fan of synth chimes for a long time - I think they tend to turn most songs into Disneyland sound tracks).

The only other thing I'll note is just to echo what fHumble said - I'd like to hear a little more "air" around the whole mix. Chalk that one up to personal taste if you'd like...

Gotta say, though, this is a typically nice JM mix and you get an extra star for the turnaround time! Good job!

nice job jeronimo.the only thing that comes to mind is in the vocals.I think they could of been a few db higher and more of a low cut to clear them up a bit.other than that a very nice job on the mix.

Hey Jeronimo, very nice mix, with some cool twists
The only part I threw out, and also bugs me in your mix is the drum part with the bouncy thingy and the clave during the bridges. I replaced them for a track that I thought to be more fitting in the song. The clave needed a huge tail imo....

    Cheers,

Heavy drums! Snare is maybe a bit too loud.

The reverse something was very sudden and didnt transition well into the chorus. Sounds like several elements in the mix are suffocating in the chorus, was there a lot of compression\limiting on the 2bus? Id say whatever it is, backing it off and you got yourself a top candidate for the winnings. Not sure about the last chorus when it's juts vocals and synths. I was ready to get up and dance but then that happened lol. Got me on that one! Good job overall though, just watch the limiting. Remember everyone that this is a mix competition and not a loudness competition. Louder mixes does not mean the best mix. Once that notion is disregarded, the dynamics in your mix will become outstanding.

    Good job overall
