Why Politics and Religion Are Allowed
Some forums ban the discussion of politics and religion. While we all don't have much trouble predicting where a discussion of such topics will ultimately lead up, I don't think it would be unacceptable for me to censor such topics.
Here's why: Duty As Human Beings
I believe we have a duty to something bigger to improve our situation and strive for progress in ways that are beneficial to everyone. Eliminating political and religious discussion makes sense in certain bars. It does not make sense to me here. If people can't come together to share ideas, expose people to new ways of thinking, or hear points of view they have not considered then how will progress ever occur? More Than Just Music
Music is obviously a huge deal to all of us. While I like to fire up Motley Crue or KISS for "fun" there are RARE times where music is supposed to mean something more than crushing a beer can on your head. Without life experiences that run the gammut, there really isn't much point to this whole music thing....other than crushing a beer can on your heard. I Have SOME Faith In Humanity
Some seem to think that discussions of religion and politics end up mostly negative. It's true this sometimes happens. If a discussion spirals out of hand, I always have the delete key handy. However, I think the RecordingReview.com community is grown up enough to handle delicate subject matter without resorting to irrationally emotional behavior.
I feel like I have gained something from each and every "useless" debate about religion and politics I've ever took part in. I believe the second I quit searching for answers is the day I'm officialy dead. I think people do gain from such discussions even if incrementally.
I believe the forums that feel the need to ban such useful discussions simply have moderators that aren't willing to put the effort into their forum that I have committed to do. With Freedom Comes Responsibility
I'm a big believe in both concepts. I refuse to add any rules that don't make a direct impact on the ability of RecordingReview.com to improve the quality of home recordings. In fact, I only have two "rules". No unlabeled hearsay and treats like you want to be treated.
When a person feels a topic has gone passed the point of being intellectually useful, it's that person's responsibility to withdraw from the thread and go back to the home recording front to engage in battle. No one is forcing you to post. If you can exhibit self control, you aren't fit for society.
