Who are "these people"? Who is going to "take their children away"?

The defense these assholes used amounted to the equivilant of "God told me to kill" or "I'm depressed".

Also, should crimes against children be classified as "hate crimes" and carry special implications? Is "hate crime" an oxymoron?

I'm not trying to bust your chops. I think you're a righteous dude. I just wanna expand on this subject some more.

I believe that one of the few entitlements a government should provide is protection. A child has no way of protecting themselves and if abused should be removed from the abuser.

In this case either nobody outside of the household knew of the existance of the child, or they didn't care.

I think we all start out as idealist and work our way down to pesisimists. The weak minded become bitter and jaded. The not-so-weak-minded just try to walk the tight rope in the middle.

A friend of a friend adopted a child that had his face completely mangled by his mother beating him to a pulp. The kid essentially looks deformed. Personally, I'm willing to give up a tad bit of freedom to let the government police this one. I seldom take that angle, but I do in this case.

Neither. What is right morally and what is right legally are two different things.

Also, to clear up, in cases of abuse and/or negligence, I do see a right for the State to help the children. However, there is a difference between negligence and being a bad parent. I'm not sure myself as to how this case would go for me. On one side, I see parents obviously not giving their kid enough nutrients. But on the other side, I'm not sure how the State could approach them, since they are making the lifestyle choice not to feed it anything from animals.

This is what I see as the problem. The State has to know that the baby is in danger first. It cannot simply step in when it notices that all the baby got was soy milk and apple juice. It would need to know that the baby was malnourished, and that it was in danger of dying or being mentally or physically damaged before it could step in. However, if the State knows that a child is being mistreated, underfed, neglected, THEN I see the right for them to step in.

Generally speaking, I'm not sure how child abuse is reported. What is our current system? I really don't want door to door checks, that's for damn sure.

I don't buy into the "good Vegan intentions" thing for a second. Their damn baby starved to death. I'm assuming the problem was in the rations and not in the actual substance they were eating, in this case. I'm guessing that there are all kinds of relatively healthy Vegan babies...(at least physically healthy....there is no way a human could grow up in that environment without a few tons of emotional scars).

While we are on the topic, I wonder how a tribe of Vegans would do against an attack from vikings or huns. This Vegan shit seams to be just another result of our "civilization" contradicting the laws of evolution. Since we all agree that Vikings pillaging and raping the nearby village is wrong, we now have to deal with Vegans starving babies. I guess I'll take the Vegans. If things get too bad, I can always get an ax and pillage the Vegan village. I could probably conquer all the Vegans by myself anyway.

it is very possible to have a good diet as a vegan...for me though...i like beef...and pork...and chicken
