Here's a slightly unrelated anecdote for ya.

A few years ago I used to run the rental department of a rather large music store. One day I had a couple of guys come in looking to rent some gear to record their album by themselves over the course of a week or so. I pointed them out to the ADAT XT and a 16-channel mixer.

"It will do eight digital tracks," I told them, "and I can rent you these compressors, effects, whatever! Just patch 'em in. You can even add more ADATS. This is fantastic."

"DIGITAL?" one of them exclaimed. "I read in a magazine that digital sounds COLD compared to the sound of analog. I want ANALOG!"

I ended up renting them a goddamn Tascam 464 cassette four-track despite my persistent insisting that there are numerous reasons that they are making a major mistake.

Who the hell says that the customer is always right?

wow this is interesting, so they went tape over the digital mixer which can be juiced by effects to make the sounds as w.a.r.m. as they could ever want! what genre of music were they recording? it sounds like they shouldnt have been recording anyway. hey at least you tried to do your job

My point is that these guys put their entire faith in a magazine article. The article actually steered them in a very wrong direction. Get some second opinions, for christsakes.

Don't get me wrong, there are very good sonic reasons to record to good quality tape, but a Tascam cassette Portastudio cannot be considered quality tape.

Likewise, none of us should believe blindly what we read in magazines, or on the internet forums . Like glenlata alluded to in the first post on this thread, his potential clients were unnecessarily biased for whatever reason. This can be frustrating at times to see inexperienced people go wrong unnecessarily.

Amen to that brother, lol the customer is always right, but they don't always get what they want.

a customer is always right when it comes to taste... but a customer is never right when they do not know what they are talking about...

I had a client that asked if I could open protools files that she had done previously, so what I did was buy a used mbox with the software for a couple hundred bucks. I opened the files and imported them to Logic. The mbox is piece of crap, and I only use Logic but yes indeed, I can say that I have protools, I just don't tell anyone that I don't use it.

i think i will just lie, not going to waste money on a program that i wont ever use, or maybe i'll just not do business with people that ask. in either case i thought this might be a fairly common occurrence but i guess not.

If you are trying to be pro or semi-pro, lying about having Pro Tools isn't such a good idea.
Lying isn't so good for a business reputation.
What if they have tracks that thy want opened from previous sessions like in an earlier post?
Buying a cheap version as someone else here did would geet you the preogram and the ability to honestly say that you have it.

This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the issues that come along with running a studio.
I don't run a studio but have heard so many stories and also just know what it is like knowing things that the general public doesn't, but that the general public thinks that they do know something about. It's almost impossible to talk to them.
