So for about the 5th time this month someone has come over and said they cant record with me because I don't use Pro Tools, and they have never heard of samplitude or wave labs. and this is after they have heard my previous work and were anxious to get started. lol, not really sure what to make of it, they like what i do, just not what i do it with, or maybe its what i do it on, or maybe its all of the above. one guy said how is it that a noob to mixing like you makes mixes that sound pro. he said i was a noob because only noobs use all that other stuff, pro's use pro tools, and thats why its call pro tools. i wanted to slit his throat with a hammer. sorry i just needed to vent, nothing against pro tools, or any one that uses it, but i'm just a little tired of this, just wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences. ![]() |

probably the best ammo against that would be a resume.. i'm only speaking from an observation.. in the commercial studio environment my experience is from the consumer. but my perspective would immediately by swayed if the engineer could show me material that sounded great and then I didn't care if it was recorded in Audacity As an example, ive been in two bands over the last 15 yrs and the 1st one was signed and had a reasonable recording budget... nice studio and plenty of time. The next one was set up in our base players basement with a young and relatively unknown engineer. I was very skeptical... but upon hearing some of his recent recordings, I was on board and that project sounded superior to the heavily financed previous recording If this info is valid, get some showcase material you have done and prove you know how to get a badass sound and it could be profools, cuespace, pretendo or whatever (not dissing these softwares, just meaning they don't matter in the end which one)

Wow I have never lost an account because of this but I can relate to the sentiment. My solution was to buy pro tools le seeing as I had an M-audio profire 2626. Ok it was more about trying the program out and seeing elastic audio etc. So now I can say I use pro tools, cubase, adat hd or reel to reel which ever combination fits the project. I then go on to explain which format/s I chose for their project and an explanation as to why. Usually their eyes are sufficiently glazed over enough at this point that we can get to what really matters. Mic pre's (kidding, sort of)

i use both pro tools hd and logic. at one time in a meeting with some executives, one of the 'producers' loudly said, 'bro, are your pro tools HD?' just because he wanted his other bosses who know next to nothing that he knows his shit. and the funny thing is that, he doesnt even know his shit. fuckers them all... |

wow what an idiot, it's amazing that people who don't know anything about recording seem to think that pro tools will make them sound better than cubase or whatever. it's just so much more fucked up that he had heard your stuff before that and was all for it before he found out it wasn't pro tools, and then the douchebag called you a noob! i would be pissed too. I say you should do what willjrockstar does and just tell them it's pro tools these kind of morons won't know the difference. |

Sample conversation: "Do you have Pro Tools?" "Yeah." "I thought Pro Tools looked different" "Older version. Different graphic interface." Some people are asking for and deserve being lied to. I use these things every day and can barely tell the different ones apart.

Can you imagine if I told people I used Digital Performer? For most people, "Pro Tools" is almost a generic reference, anyway. Consider the expression "Pro Tooled" for describing digital audio monkey business. I like Paul's suggestion of quickly swamping the conversation with technical jargon/concerns so they can turn their minds to the task at hand.
