| Irrelevant Stuff Here This is for people who would rather talk about god / pizza than songwriting and condenser microphones. |

To those of you who have or work at REAL studios, how prevalent is smoking weed/slash drinking in the studio? I believe in working in the studio, and would not do this if I were paying for studio time, but I have always wondered. Are studios accepting of this type of thing, as it is common with artist I know, or am I hallucinating? I have freinds that come by, with the intentions of working on a track, but once they get high, productivity is a seldom occurance. I could see this as being a hinderance to some, not myself, but the majority. Does this take place in most studios? (the smoking not the waste of time)

Bands are free to do whatever they want in my place (within reason) as long as it doesn't bother me. There is no smoking anything in the house just because it's very hard on the microphones. Drinking is only allowed if I get a beer or two also. I used to never drink while I was "working". Then one day I realized that I didn't want recording to be work. I've lightened up a lot. It really depends on the session though. I'd say 1/3 of the bands bring beer these days. I'd say that 1/8 bring weed. Some people are way too damn tense and nervous in the studio and need a joint to chill them out. I look at these mood altering drugs kind of like an EQ. Some people are annoying and need a little boost at 3K with a hit and then they are about right. Brandon |

It can make a lot of musicians sound better in a studio situation if they feel the music but don't forget its very common that it will make stuff take a lot longer so do it when time is on your side I'd say. I've recorded at a lot of different types of studios... some not only allow but obviously do regularly, some are completely against it. Ben

Keep smoking of any kind out of the studio... Your equipment will last longer, and if you send them outside to smoke, you're more likely to get more production time and less smoking time which (it seems to me) is more likely ot result in people getting relaxed rather than too stoned to do anything. There is always a fine line that has to be walked. Every person is different. If there were no drugs used on recordings just imagine how many of your favorite records would have been severely altered. I'm not condoning drugs in any way (except for beer), but I say that we are all adults. I let the adults I work with make their own decisions about their work methodology. As long as I get paid and they are more comfortable everything will work itself out in the end. Brandon |

I don't smoke, drink, or use drugs (all are kinda illegal for me, I'm underage), but I think that the worst thing you can do to your voice is smoke. That being said, I respect your decision to smoke, but I would advise against it. Unless you need it to calm down, then it's sorta okay, but again, not great. But maybe I sound too much like your mother. Whatever works for you. -Tyler

Many claim that smoking if horrible for your voice. then again... Many of the most successful artists in the world have said that they smoke as much as possible on singing days. It's like everything else. The "perfect" thing isn't always the best for creating great music. Brandon |

Yeah, my voice teacher last year smoked, and her voice was pretty bad. But that's classical and renaissance, not rock, so it's quite different. Hey, most of the big band names smoke/smoked (John, Paul, George, Ringo, Tom Petty, Eric Clapton, pretty much anyone famous...), so maybe there is something to be said about it. -Tyler
