With Prince, there sure is a blur between showman and musician...
Must confess that I had thought he was all wind and eyelashes![]()

Yeah Nuno used to be awesome ... haven't heard much about him in awhile. That's kind of how creativity goes, in rushes and spurts and then you have the rest of a lifetime to ride that wave. Definitely there's a "performer" (showman/guitarist) vs. "musician" contrast. One tries to stand out and the other tries to blend in.
Mee too Emma. I thought he was being over hyped as a guitar player because he was such showman.Must confess that I had thought he was all wind and eyelashes
I hear ya bud. It always amazed me how a person could be so emotional about something thats been done a billion times before.I think the thing with Prince is he plays with "emotion", you can tell he is totally absorbed.
I forgot how subjective all this is before i started the thread.
Do we have to do all that?I could take this thread to infinity perhaps![]()
Just to be clear, I said: Great guitarists aren't just about lead breaks. Some of my favorite guitarists are phenomenal lead players - eg. Gary Moore - but they learned how to shut up to: "speak" in phrases & give themselves "breaths" - not just babble on endlessly like a vacuous 12 year old.
You would think that they would be synonymous. That doesn't make a great guitarist...that makes a great musician!!!
Greatness when it comes to music is very time oriented. Its all about taking the old and twisting it into something new. And it can be something as small as waiting an extra .0000000001 ms in between notes, or the pick is at an angle that is .000001degrees different than someone else. Those intangibles that can't really be measured are what the difference between great and really good. All of the greats were one with their instrument though, watch their face as they play. That orgasm face when they play tells it all!!

What about Vai.. Amaxing guitar player, can't say I like him as a musician though!! His songs are ok, his sounds are amazing. But I know what you are saying. If I was in a band with a top notch technical guitar player but he couldn't play to the song I would say he sucked too.

Hey! I want an orgasm face too dammit!!!That orgasm face when they play tells it all!!
Yeah, i like that so much, i think i'll just be having an O-face on me all the time now!! People will be like, "wow - hes into it" << Id just be standing there.
I'll be layin a brick at work tomorrow with my new orgasm face, and they'll be saying how i love my job. Im excited!! The orgasm face is a cant lose situation.
Funny thing tho, i dont like it when drummers do it.
