Certainly I agree with Brandon's basic thesis, i.e. hardcore Apple fanatics are part of a cult. However there are some objective benefits to the Apple computing platform: More reliability, Can run Cubase, Logic, Digital Performer AND Protools, and they often look pretty cool. Of course there are objective disadvantages too such as the obscene price. However, I agree that people who treat Apple products as a 'lifestyle' are completely insane. Also, there is truth in the point that consumption is not an end in itself, it is a means to an end. One should not consume for its own sake. One should consume for a reason! And if that reason is "to fit in with buddies" I reserve the right to look down on you.

| At least in my experience, music gear tends to work better on Macs. Of course, a PC can be made extremely reliable under studio conditions too, but PC's are a much more diverse product and hence are much more "roulette"-oriented in terms of the results you can expect. As a result, Macs are more stable ceteris paribus, although Im sure a specialized music PC can be just as stable.

You are right about the "diversity" problem with PCs. With so many choices, it can be a pain. I just can't get myself to "blame" PCs because there are cheaper options. The lack of "diversity" in a Mac causes it's own problems. It keeps prices high. It makes tweaking the Mac to an individual person's specs tougher as well. Of course, if the average computer user was to fire up a Dell and then fire up a Mac, I've got a feeling the Mac would be preferrable. Most name brand PCs are total garbage simply because all the shit they bog them down with. At least PCs give me the option for me to put together my own system that will be reliable. Brandon |

And I agree, Macs are pricey. But someone that just wants to open a box and go for it and be guaranteed of success is usually happy to part with extra cash to make that happen. In the end of course, your situation is the deciding factor for your choice. But for many audio engineers, their situation makes Macs a better option that they are willing to pay for. If a PC does it for you, go for it. Im a PC user myself, but when I get a dedicated studio computer, I will seriously consider a Mac, although Im more than open to a custom built PC.
