The army's been missing it's recruiting quotas for many months now, and so is hiring dumber and dumber people: http://www.slate.com/id/2133908/nav/tap1/?GT1=7641 So, here's the question: Would re-instituting the draft, or some other kind of mandatory military service, be a good idea? Now, I know all you anti-war people are going to say "Hey, it's not my war, I'm not gonna fight it." But think about it. If people knew they might have to fight in a war, they'd think twice before voting for someone who would go to war. Also, it would give the army more potential soldiers to pick through. Now, here's an interesting way to look at it: Mandatory military service is like a form of taxation, only instead of money, you are providing a service. Me, I think a draft might be inevitable if we keep going out and fighting this "War on Terror." I just hope it will make people think twice about fighting in needless wars. -Tyler

Theoretically, that's my answer, too. But I think a draft would be helpful to show people the consequence of their vote. -Tyler

Think about it. I don't know anyone who voted to go to war in Iraq. That was Congress' job and they voted unanomously in favor of the war across party lines. We are better served with an all volunteer military. My dad was drafted in '68 and he's told me some stories about the lack of disipline in the military in those days from the top down. The draft and an unpopular war resulted in a weakend military that didn't recover until the second Reagan term. Not to mention the fact that our continuously improving military technology makes a draft unnessary. We simply don't need as many soldiers to fight a war today. I've heard Vietnam described as a war that was lost on TV. The war in Iraq is being lost ONLY on TV! Lump

My first post was made jokingly but unfortunately sarcasm doesn't transfer well over the internet. I'm not stereotyping all republicans as pro-war, I've just yet to meet one that isn't but I'm sure there are some out there and I can see how my first posts seemed like that. In regards to the draft I think it is a bad idea becasue it forces people into war who don't want to fight. I know people who were drafted and have horrific stories about their time in the army. People who are against the war shouldn't have to fight in it. If there was a draft I think that only those who are for the war should be drafted and I think that if a policy like that was used a lot of people would change their minds about the war pretty damn quickly.
