There is this local band here that to be honest, isn't very good but they have a female singer who everyone thinks is hot so automatically they are considered "good." A few big bands have come through here and they have somehow gotten to open for them. They don't actually go on tour with these bands but when they come through here, they open. In May they will open for NIN and Jane's Addiction. How does a band even get an opportunity like this? To be honest, it's frustrating to see someone else living my dream and yes I am a little jealous and I'm just wondering how a crappy band can pull off something huge. Any ideas? |

Sadly popular music is not about music anymore; its about image. Would Mariah sell as many records if her fat ass wasn't being shoved in our faces? Would Christina be as popular if she weren't running around almost naked? Sex sells. Image sells. Period.

I say yes and no. I suppose its possible to be so great that you will get noticed no matter what, but the more likely scenario is that you are a good or average band that has connections so you will go somewhere. But yes image is a huge part of the equation. At the end of the day you are selling an idea, and the music is just part of that. Who the music is made by and how its packaged has a huge impact on how you percieve it. Rappers are an exaggeration of this. And just another tip for mindset, don't assume that you are better than someone who has achieved more. Odds are you are living in a bubble - if you want what they have, you apparently have to do something more like them. Don't just shut off and stubbornly refuse to adjust. That said, I'm not advocating changing your musical goals or style. But if your first goal is getting very popular, maybe you should because certain styles do lend themselves to that. I was a little jealous, but no...to be honest I don't think they are very good at all. And alot of people from around here have said that. They somehow manage to open for alot of big bands that come through here though. And they aren't all the same kind of bands either. They have opened for every kind of band ranging from the yeah yeah yeahs to Green Jelly. |
