Default Crash: Best Picture At the Oscars??

Man,

Even the Oscar's suck. This movie, "Crash", was worth watching, but certainly didn't change my life any. I'm very picky about my movies and if Crash is worth watching, that means it's actually very good. However, if this is the best Hollywood has to offer, they are in not much better shape than the damn music industry.

By the way, have you guys noticed that there are many more PG-13 movies than there used to be? Maybe it's just me, but it seams like you seldom see nudity in a popular film. It seams like the entire industry is willing to dumb down their movies to a PG-13 level so they can sell tickets to all the kids who line up at theaters every Friday night with their $7 ticket and $7 popcorn.

I'm not the "artist" type of guy, but sucking the realisim out of a film just so more kids can watch seams to totally ruin many movies.

I say we ban the rating system and let 13 year old kids in to see R movies. What 13 year old kid hasn't seen an R movie anyway?

WHile I didn't see any of the movies, I figured Brokeback Mountain wasn't going to win like everyone said it would. I mean, the whole gay theme is just too off-limits right now for it to be a "Best Picture." Crash, on the other hand, is something we all love: condemning racism.

I agree with the PG-13 rating. Also, I would like to see a good movie in which the bad guy wins. Just once. And not have it followed up by a sequel having the good guys win.

Condemning racism? I thought it was promoting it! I guess I didn't quite get the message. I was too busy laughing. I get a huge kick out of stereotyping and racial slurs. Crash was a wet dream come true for me.

Rating systems... I'm rarely aware of what a film is rated when I go see it in the theatre or pick it up at the video store. Whether or not it's a good movie is what I'm more concerned with. While I'm a fan of nudity in films, it rarely adds anything to the overall quality of the film. In fact, if those scenes were replaced with more plot driven ones, I wouldn't mind.

By the way, one of the best movie series of all time, The Adventures of Indiana Jones, is rated PG.

The Rocky series also rated PG

You are gonna have to give up on that idea. There are a few (but if i told you what they are, it would sort of give it away, wouldn't it). I've noticed that almost all my favorite movies end with the good guy dieing in the end.

You had a good argument until you threw that in there. Until you have participated in a Rock-a-thon where you want 5 Rocky movies in 5 consecutive nights, you have no idea how shitty these movies are. Sure, they are fun in moderation, but you may have to go the hospital after 5 nights straight. Maybe I should have been more responsible with my movie watching.

It's not so much that a movie needs nudity (although it's a strong plug no matter it's a guy's ass or a chick's rack). I think there are so many movies made now that cut out anything remotely real in the interest of letting kids to see the films in the theaters. I can understand wanting to make money, but it just sucks that the movie suffers when they do.

There are a number of great movies that are PG ish range. (Actually Indiana Jones movies are PG-13. They were going to be rated R, but Spielberg approached the MPAA about creating a PG 13 division and therefor Raiders of the Lost Ark is the first PG13 movie.) Star Wars is , of course, PGish, and one my favorite movies, Second Hand Lions, is also PGish. That doesn't make them bad.

However, when you take an epic battle scene and take all the violence out of it, you are cheating the audience out of the story. We can sterilize the film and take out the blood; claiming that it's for the unintelligent, but I beg to differ. The notion that a viking could storm your village and put a stake right through your wife's chest is something that people of this time faced every day. When you take that out of the movie, you are (in some ways) disgracing the whole situation. This is a strong example.

For me, Rated R stands for Rated R in most cases. Of course, I don't watch many new action movies. I'm typically talking about dramas.

You make a stronger point now that you've gone further than just nudity. I agree that gore and violence can be an integral part of a movie's plot. The day I see a Viking movie that doesn't have a Scandanavian drinking mead out of some dude's skull is the day I totally lose faith in the magic of film.

With the exception of 2 and 5, I think the Rocky movies are pretty good.

I believe what you said about the Spielburg thing. But my Indiana Jones collection says they are PG rated. It came out in 2003. So it must have changed somewhere along the lines.

That's strange on the Indiana Jones thing. On the extras of the box set is where I learned that Spielberg had the PG-13 created specifically for Indiana Jones. I guess I should believe everything I see on TV.

Dude. Even if Indiana Jones was having magic tea party time with Furry, the elven bunny rabbit, he would stick be an ass kicking dude.

That makes me think about all these Chuck Norris, Mr. T, and Vin Diesel jokes going around. Why are there none of Harrison Ford?
