Default Computer process', how many are you running?

Just a short general question aimed at everyone;

How many process' does your computer run when you're recording?

I normally try to get it down to 50 or less, but am just curious to whether this is the average or whether people can get it down much less to make it easier on the comp.

I just fired up Task Manager and I count 32 without Cubase running. I should point out that my DAW is not networked and I turn off all unnecessary services (which is more than half of the standard XP services).

23 including Firefox, instant messaging, and Last FM player.

BTW the shortcut for task manager is ctrl+alt+Num. (period on numpad)
I just found that the other day.

Try to whittle it down to about 30-35. I'm guessing you're on a laptop, they usually have a few more than desktops for some reason.

First make sure that there are XP drivers for all of your hardware. A friend of mine recently purchased a Dell pre-installed with Vista. He wanted XP but Dell didn't offer XP drivers for all of the hardware. I ended up tracking down the drivers from European distributors. Apparently Dell sells this system in Europe with XP but not in the states. Probably some agreement between Dell and Microsoft to try and force Vista on the American consumers. <shake head>

Hi #

Which Windows processes can be ended without causing problems with cubase and audio processing in general?

@ aburik; just look at the description, stuff like 'iTunesHelper Module' can go, but don't end process' if you don't know what they're for. I remember a couple of years ago ending 'explorer' thinking it was iexplorer , what a nasty shock when everything went black, ha, but *process' always seam to come back after a restart so don't kick yourself too hard if you mess up.
*this is just from my personal expirence, if i'm wrong someone PLEASE correct me!
hopefully someone with more knowledge can give you better advice.

Thanks for the replies Sparqee and Audio Geek

It's up to you to decide what is necessary for your computer but you can find plenty of suggestions on the web. Do a google search on turning off windows services DAW or variations on those words and you'll find out a lot of stuff. A good place to start would be to look at the process list and see what's using lots of memory and/or CPU time. Do a google search on the process names (e.g. DKserv.exe) and you'll find explanations of what the process is about. Processes may or may not be associated with a service or they may be something in your startup menu. The more you can learn about what your computer is actually doing moment to moment the better you will be able to decide what you *want* it to be doing.

Tommorrow i'm installing xp, i've decided to do a partition so have vista and xp dual boot off the same drive,
then on my second drive may do a partition to seperate recording projects from my normal user files.. but that would just be for convenience of defragmenting.
I know i should jus forget vista but i've got plenty of space and i just can't stand the idea of throwing away something i've payed for. Thats proberly why i've got a box full of old cd drives, psu's,..(old batteries? ha cant get rid of 'em)etc

I cant believe these amount of process', here's me thinking i'm on to a winner when i scrape 49!!
