Default Common sense courtesies

Some things are obvious...or are they? Common sense says that when waiting for an elevator to open you should stand to the side so people can exit without running in to you. I conducted an experiment at the mall last weekend to see if this is in fact a shared knowledge. I rode up and down the elevator 10 times, the results were shocking.

The first trip I met an elderly asian couple politely standing to the side waiting to see if anyone needed to exit. Thank you elderly asian couple.

The next trip was not so pleasant. The doors opened to a red haired woman and her mammoth stroller complete with fat ugly ginger baby. We stood there for a moment, staring at each other, neither of us able to move. I had made up my mind that I was not going to budge. She started manuevering her stroller as if to go around me but there was not enough room. Frustrated she said, "Excuse me," to which I replied, "Oh, I'm sorry, am I in your way?" That's when the elevator doors started closing. I let them close and rode back to the top floor where I ran into another woman with a stroller. This lady and her baby were much more attractive, however, as the doors opened she immediatley started entering and ran right into me. She appologized and backed up so I could exit the elevator. This is where it gets really funny. When the lift went back down to pick up the ugly redheaded family, I stood there blocking the exit with an idiot look on my face.

Over the next hour, during a busy Saturday afternoon, my path was blocked a total of 6 times. Only 4 people could think far enough into the future to anticipate someone exiting the elevator. The biggest culprits were kids and women with strollers.

I know what you're thinking!

And sadly you are right, I have no girlfriend

I think much would depend on the business of the elevator. Here in Missouri, elevators are "kinda weird". It's safe to assume that in most cases the elevator would be empty. However, in a busier local it would make sense to automatically assume the elevator would have people aboard. So that part doesn't bother me all that much.

What bothers me is the dumbasses who couldn't immediately figure out that they should move out the way to allow the elevator to empty.

I'm glad you have no life, because I enjoyed your little study. You may want to check out the book: The Pyschology of Influence. It has all kinds of things like this. It's a badass book!

all too common

what i hate is when we let a group off and then
they all stand in front yakking
blocking us from getting on
dont move until the doors shut and we have to wait for it to go all the way up and come back down again

it amazes me there isn't a greater mortality rate for babies whose moms use them to say...'stop traffic'... for example...but there is no Darwinian effect in play here, unfortunately.
I give strollers a wide birth (pardon the pun) in any situation, but sometimes anyone can get paths crossed by a parent using a stroller like a cattle pusher on the front of a train to get through a crowd.

however ... if common sense were truly common, we wouldn't have any understanding or appreciation of it ... and those looking to be offended are rarely disappointed.

It worries me that you notice how attractive a lady is when she has a stroller. Man, that would be the drooper for me right there. To notice how attractive her baby is, worries me even more.

But then again, I hate almost everyone under age 25.

have you tried Homerecording Matchmaker Wizard? if you havent, brandon's second book is a self-help manual about getting the right partner, complete with music technology analogy.

a quote from the upcoming best seller:
meeting the right one is like looking for a Fender Strat in a fish market. you are never gonna find a badass chick/guy there.

enticing isnt it?

anyway, nice post, you should live in china like me. they'll look at you like an alien when you speak about common sense. umm on second thought they already look at you without you saying a single word.

and the accent doesnt help.

hmmmmnnnn elevator frustrations...
Some of mine include
People who the door open by standing in your way of getting off. Just hold the damn button and stand out of the way.
People yelling in to their cell phones because they think the other party can't hear them. No dumb ass your call has been disconnected 'cause your in a metal box.
People who are talking to other people while getting off the elevator and have to look back , slow down , even stop and wait for the other people to get off. Just let everybody get off and STFU.
People who cough on the control panel.
People who cough on their hands, and then press the buttons.
Probably the most irritating thing is people who get on the elevator on the first floor just to go down one level. Especially fat people.
Oh I could go on, I was a bike messenger for ten years. 30 or 40 trips a day on elevators. Never once have I got stuck on one tho.
I wish they would give mandatory lessons in school for common sense.

I'm with you, except I also include everyone over 25 as well.

Hell, I'll add that it to the book now. It doesn't make any sense, but neither does anything else I put in there.

That's what I would expect in Alabama, too. Interesting. I wonder if everyone from Alabama is from Beijing.
