Default Burning in Headphones

I have 2 pairs of what I consider high end or at least decent headphones. Sennheiser HD 280s & Ultrasones HFI-780s. Both recommend a burn in time I want to say of 8 hours.

I have read on some forums that even 300+ hours you're still getting better sound, but obviously that's extreme.

My understanding is that you want to have them playing loud continuously for long periods of time to set the drivers into place or something like that. I've been running my music while I'm at work everyday loudly and it's been nagging me that I may hurt them.

I would like to know what people suggest with regard to burning in headphones. I want the best sound, but not if it's going to burn out the phones.

it really depends on the model but the bottom line is bass response will be lacking a bit at first. you'd want to put them on, set the volume so it's pleasingly loud and run them off and on over the next week.

Thank you! I appreciate it. I've been dealing with a major upgrade switch to Vista and hardware and working out the kinks there so cut back on the burn in. I think I sufficiently burned them in the several days I did for both and the bass is prevalent. I am actually getting a pair of Sennheiser HD580s soon which is kind of ridiculous to have 3 pairs lol. It's something being given to me because of circumstances, but it's funny nonetheless. I have decided I will use that pair in my living room for my new receiver/system for late night movies/gaming. Now I won't have to unplug my Ultrasones and walk the amazingly long distance to the next room and plug them in there. =)

I had never heard this one before. Interesting. I guess I'll toss my headphones on to burn in.

This is all second hand info mind you. I just have seen several threads where they discussed this and even the headphone manufacturers sites seem to mention it as well.

I inherited a pair of Sennheiser HD580s now so I have my Ultrasones 780 plus my original bargain buy Sennheiser 280's. More than I can realistically use but I'm stoked anyway! Great site if I didn't say so already.

After letting mine run for about 10 hours, it did appear that they had more low end than before, but I couldn't imagine a less reliable testimony. My mood in regard to audio junk changes like the weather!
