Dude, cut the crap. Quit studying to be an electrician. Get ANY job in a studio immediately, put a band together, and get things done.

Ever seen "The American Tail". It's a cartoon about European mice who come to the us in the 1800s. They sing a song that says "There are no cats in America". Then when they get to America they say "Oh shit! Cats are everywhere!".

My name is Brandon Drury
I'm an alcoholic at least 1 day per month but seldom more than 2. I run a local recording studio from my home which is suffering from the slowest business ever. I run a stupid website called RecordingReview.com which is quite a bit of fun. I'm currently writing my first book which is on the subject of home recording. I'm fairly skilled at anything web based except for graphic design. HTML, php, mysql, etc are things I'm all fairly proficient in.

My extreme independence has led me down a path where I make my own way. I haven't had a real job since January of 2003. As eutopian as that may sound, it's been a very difficult road. A steady paycheck would be nice sometime soon!

He's studying electrical engineering which is a good thing to have as an audio engineer. In fact many of your top audio engineers such as Bob Katz are BSEE's... Far more advanced than an electrician.

Wow! If that's your good side, I'd hate to see your bad side, yohami!
Rufio87, I sorta grew up in the studio and now my brother and I own it. Dad retired and his eq isn't too hot anymore cuz of so many hours in the control room.
I play bass tracks, second engineer and am involved in long range rifle shoots.
Sei doch nicht beleidigt, gel? Der is doch Ami, oder?

Hi Latigo. Its not a bad side. Dream is what you do at night to evade the daily reality. Instead of dreaming he can get things done and change his reality, so he can dream with pinky bunnies or whatever he like. There are so many people out there having dreams and doing nothing about them.

I guess that's true too, yohami. I've never actually dreamed that much cuz my Dad was always there to support everything I've wanted to do and my brother too. I've been fortunate.

While there is no substitute for directly tackling the task at hand, life is WAY more complicated that what you are making it out to be.

A degree in Electrical Engineering is the fastest, easiest way to get a gig in the few modern big boy studios left. Getting that gig is the fastest way to the big time of recording. It's much faster than snagging a Mbox and recording a bunch of local musicians until you eventually work your way to meeting your goals. On top of that, everyone in the universe has a Mbox or equivalent now. Having an EE degree to fall back on is a brilliant move in my opinion!

Also, there is nothing wrong with working at X job making good money doing something interesting and then coming home to a decent house (which most recording people don't have) having the option to go to the doctor (which most recording people don't have because they can't afford insurance) etc.

Long story short, I'm all for the guy who wants to go all out for the big dream, but I'm also 100% for the guy who has more conservative goals.

And it gets exponentially complicated in proportion to the time spent in the wrong direction.

I dont care about the size of the dream, the dream concept itself is wrong. There should be goals and activities. If you are studying to be a teacher, becoming a teacher aint a dream, its the natural result of what you´re doing. Anyway.
