In support of SRV - Here's some YouTube stuff of a live show before he was really known that well. You can see why he became known after watching it...

YouTube - stevie ray vaughn live at el mocambo

I love his rendition of Little Wing. His instrumentals were amazing.
Guitar players are a dime a dozen, not him.
Zakk Wylde said that SRV's version of "Little Wing" is proof that God exists. I agree.

And the Clapton comment reminds me of a story...in the early 60's, Jeff Beck had a standing gig in a club in California. He heard Hendrix play, flew him to Cali, and brought him to the manager and said "You've got to hear this guy, he's great." The manager agreed to put him in with the house band that night. At the time, Eric Clapton was the house band's guitar player, and was told by the manager that "if his playing starts going down, you pick it up and don't let him play again."

3 notes into the song, Clapton took off his guitar, dropped it on the ground, and walked offstage to watch the show.

(This story has not been validated. A good friend of mine that used to be my boss told me this story. He was a friend of the bassist, and heard the story after the show.)

Didn't Travis Bean make guitars with aluminum necks?
I haven't really listened to Leslie West since that summer of Rock Festivals. I got a handful of home tapes for some R-T-R I recently picked-up and that Miss. Queen album was in there. He is very fine with the subtle technique.

When I was first learning to play I must have seen Mountain at least 8 or 9 times at the Eastown Theater in Detroit. You could get close enough to see what he was actually doing, and that got me out of the chord books and into being able to improvise in major and minor keys in a couple of positions. There was no tab or easy way to learn things, you did it by ear and trial and error. The fact that he played simply and melodically made it possible to pick a few learning blocks up and expand from there. I'm sure there are lots of players that owe a lot to him.

Eastown? Man, that was a while back.

I've been here in Detroit so long that my flack jacket is like a second skin and that theatre was long gone when I landed.

Heard there were some great shows there though.

For sure !! I was lucky to have clubs that had great acts starting around '66. Original Mac, Albert King, that Led Something or other group. The Kinetic Playground/Electric Theater in Chicago had those three act weekends (75 mile drive) - just wild and a real lesson every time. I was quite grizzled by the time Mountain Climbing came out so I didn't give him the notice he deserved - but I never forgot him and had been looking to grab some of his stuff just these last few years.

When I was on Ultimate Guitar, there was a John Frusciante fan club that took up, like, 2/3 of the members. It was rediculous. If anything, he's a little overrated. I love old Chili Peppers, but their new stuff is just recycled garbage.

Really? On a lot of guitar forums it seems like JF is barely ever even mentioned. Hmm....
