still gotta say this was a good thread! I still play Merl Travis guitar licks, and I love Doc Watson and the way he plays I also love Johnny Cash and his rhythm playing...

This is a great question, if only to make you think about your music. A severely brief list for me would be: Dave Gilmour, Albert Lee, Clapton, Page, Hendrix, Freddie King. I find as i am getting older i am enjoying styles I have overlooked as a young'un. Blues, Jazz stuff from Duke Robillard and Charlie Byrd and even guitar versions of Duke Ellington classics. I will listen to Rage against the Machine, Sublime and System of a Down and thoroughly enjoy them as much as I do the Beatles, Stones, Who, Zep, Sabbath and the Doors which are more my era. What I am saying is that if you pigeonhole yourself into a specific 'cool' genre you won't grow as a musician because there is so much going on in all genres that you would miss out on. This what experiencing music is all about for me anyway. Go back and check the roots and apply it to your own music, its amazing how 'new' it sounds 40 years later. Prince, he's one of the most underrated guitarists in history, and Batio isn't even brought up in conversations most of the time. Plus don't even get me started on Tom Morello.

I like those intelligent players, who arent always ripping out massive solos and competing with the vox/melody. You know where the guitars seem to kind of sit in the background until you really listen to it and realise they are doing some imagnative things eg lindsay buckingham (fleetwood mac) the guy from The Sundays George harrison REM always have nicely layered, complimentary pop guitars aswell, dont know who the guy is though |

I'm really just a little bit of everyone. I can't say I really love anyones guitar playing to any extreme, MAYBE Dominic Ciffarelli from Pulse Ultra (few people really know this band, the song Acceptance: Phase II Finding My Place off of Headspace has some really cool guitar work, they were essentially a power trio plus a singer-none of the other band mates sung, if they did, you know that would instill the power trio attitude). I'm happy with the way I play because I've been fortunate enough to be inspired by so many talented individuals. -Greg |

Well I would have to say Mark Morton and Willie Adler of Lamb of God, Kirk Hammet, and Dimebag. Towards the beginning, for some reason Ben Moody (former guitarist of Evanescence) really influenced my playing when i was first learning. I like Dimebag's tones because they are tones that are so individual, it seems like. I feel that way about Mark's and Willie's tones, and I love their styles. They don't have the "tones of bombing the bass and distortion on 10 and killing the mids and highs" sound. It actually sounds good! I can't forget the good blues players out there also.

Tom Morello is a pretty creative guy, and really nice to boot. But, I'd have to say my favorites are Clarence White from the Byrds/Kentucky Colonels and David Grissom ![]() Tom Morello & I Backstage a few years ago at an Audioslave gig.
