Mike Campbell is great in the sense that he plays the obvious very well. Meaning that if I was in his band, playing on their songs, my riffs would come out pretty close to what he plays, and those riffs are a perfect fit for those songs that probably couldn't be played any better than the way Mike Campbell plays them. |

I agree, but the flipside is he is such an outstanding guitar player, but he never plays to show off his skill. He plays just what the song needs. Nothing more, nothing less. Holding back sometimes takes more skill, I think.

Go beyond the Heartbreakers,,,,, Dirty Knobs..... Blue Stingrays Mike really wails! Mike is my hero. And I'd particularly like to visit his guitar room, rather, museum! ** |

There is a really good interview with Tom and Mike in GP magazine just after the release of 'Echo', which they self produced in Mikes home studio. It is about the next best thing to actually going into Mikes guitar room. At the end of the article they both said they probably wouldn't do that again because it was way too much work. Which is sort of a shout out to all of us who have no other way of making recordings ![]() IS Mike actually in Blue Stingrays? We're all pretty sure, but... |

Oh jeez... favorite guitarists? Biggest influences? Well... let's see... Hendrix would be the obvious one. Right along with B.B. King. Good god that man's a genius on the guitar. One of my favorite acoustic artists that I've recently discovered is a guy named Andy McKee. The man's incredible. James Hetfield, oddly enough. Not a big Metallica fan, but I just like his bluesy metal riffs. /shrug Jim Croce probably had a pretty big influence on my guitar playing... Grew up listening to my mom playing "Time In A Bottle" on her old Harmony acoustic, lol. Dave Matthews... He showed me that the acoustic doesn't have to be about nothing but chords and simple strumming... And that's all I care to think of at the moment... Oh, whoever the guitarist for Planet X is... Actually that whole band blew me away and got me wanting to play like them on everything from drums to guitar.

While I'm not too sure their influence can be heard in my playing there are certain guitarists that inspire me to play. My favorites include: Ritchie Blackmore, Gary Moore, Michael Schenker, Uli Roth, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Yngwie Malmsteen and Steven Wilson. I've also been a long-time fan of the twin guitar attack a la Dave Murray & Adrian Smith, Chris DeGarmo & Michael Wilton and Joe Perry & Brad Whitford. Early inspirations included Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, BB King, Freddie King and Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown. Oh yeah... can't forget Rick Neilsen!

If I could only listen to Doc Watson and Chet Atkins for the rest of my life, I might never get bored. A less flashy, but absolutely brilliant and underrated player in my opinion is Elliot Smith. |
