Kick äss!
For real. If you get a chance, rent the Bob Dylan 50th Birthday concert. Neil, Clapton, Petty, the Band...list goes on. But Neil is in top form and having a really good time up there, especially in the big jam at the end. Actually, he kind of dominates and pushes his weight around there at the end, acting a little like a fat drunk guy at an orgy. The other heavyweights all just look on and smile.

It's from the early 90's, kind of the start of Eric Clapton's role as mega show organizer, probably an offshoot of what he'd been doing on the SRV tours prior to this.

Ive played drums all my life and have had many people who Ive looked up to in that area. Metallica have always been a big influence on me and since I started playing guitar about 3 months ago Ive started enjoying James Hetfield's playing more and more. He truly is one of the greats. However, one of the main reasons I first picked up an axe was after I watched Rammsteins Volkerball DVD. Richard Z. Kruspe just made guitar playing look so cool.
Having said that, I dont try to emulate anyone else's playing. There are obviously those who I like watching but generally I just play the best I can according to me.

You do mean Kirk Hammett right? James plays rythms but I am pretty sure Hammett writes most of the guitar parts nowdays and he is the lead guitar player for Metallica. Listen to and try to play some of Dave Mustaines' stuff that he sings and plays at the same time. Some really old metallica is Dave Mustaine also. 2 of the best at playing and singing commercially to me are Jimi Hendrix and Billy Gibbons. there are some really good Bass player singers out there also. It is twice as hard to sing and play with feeling into both parts than just to play..... But, Kirk is the lead guitar player.

Kirk definitely kicks ass there's no doubt but I was talking about James. He's got this really quick strumming thing he does that just kills me whenever I hear it. Love Megadeth and Dave's playing too (he always reminds me of Mike Myers in Waynes World lol).

Tom Araya immediately jumps to mind. I was watching some live Slayer stuff and man that guy can play!

That's right.

I also really dig the guitar playing of Jack White and the guitarist in the swedish band Dungen. And Ace Mark of Big Elf is also really cool.

Oh, and ofcourse my all time favourite Pete Townsend. ... and Luther Perkins from the early Johnny Cash band.
But Neil is always my first choice...

Actually, It is documented that Hetfield writes most of the main parts to Metallica's repitoire...plus the lyrics...and he plays a couple solos too. I think the solo in "Nothing Else Matters" that Hetfield plays/wrote is one of his best. Kirk Hammett is amazing as well. He can keep up with James on the rhythms, and writes some of the most killer solos I've heard in metal. Sure, they're not the speediest, most technical solos out there...but their sheer power whip ass. But James is the main song/riff writer. And, his down-stroked palm muting technique was second to none in his prime. Nowadays though, metal guitarists that can do this are a dime a dozen...because of Hetfield's efficiently robotic technique. When Hammett plays the same thing, he's not as tight, but just as quick.
