Bunch of different guitars, nothing overy special
Amps: Line 6 Vetta 2 JCM 800 50 watt (blonde) JCM 900 Peavey 5150 2 different Gallien Kruegers Laney something or other head Fender Vibrolux --- sold my Orange head like a dumbass Cabs: 4x12 Marshall 4x12 Hiwatt 4x12 Fender couple of custom speaker cabs Recording Enclosure Amps that I borrow from a couple of doors away: Marshall Plexi Dr. Z's custom, Dumble something or other Fender SR and Twin Vox Ac 30 All my pedals were stolen... I'll eventually buy some more Isolation can sometimes be a problem so I built a box. I used the vinly stuff and mineral wool covered with sheets. Insulation stripping where the door closes. There's not much sound that escapes and you can easily have a conversation next to the box while the Marshalls are set to 11. Just some LF's escape. I sometimes just use 1 cabinet lengthwise and change out cabinets but it is a major PITA.... excuse the messiness of this area... It actually sounds pretty good but different since it's "in the box"... It does sound better with the door partly open and a room mic in the room . Sounds MUCH better than anything software. The little amps get recorded directly in the room but the cabs need to be cranked. |

A friend of mine has one of those Wallmart 'First Act' guitars, something like a Les Paul design. He also has an expensive home recording studio with CD burner, but I forget which one. I have never heard the Wallmart guitar he has. However, I used to have a webpage marked, possibly at soundclick, where this guy in California recorded some slide work on something I think is probably quite a bit less quality than a Wallmart guitar and it sounded really cool! I seem to remember that 'dog' was in his username. I don't have the time to go and search for it. 'Ricochet' posted the link somewhere but I forgot where. A Wallmart guitar is alot better than no guitar, and there are alot of people in the world who are too poor to have any guitarat all. For that reason I don't have any prejudices against someone elses 'cheap' guitar, or my own. Phangeaux

I don't know what works the best for recording yet since I haven't done any recording, but will very soon.
I am going to bank on my Continental Style II (rose engraved) Tricone resonator as being capable of producing some great sounds.? That is the finest and best made instrument I have and I am really amazed with it.? I have had it for a few years and it keeps getting better. I'll have to provide some background to put everything into perspective about my equipment, so here is my story:? I have had some great guitars long ago.? My first guitar was a very nice Gibson Acoustic, probably 1940's or early 1950's vintage. I wish I still had it, I can still remember the very high quality and sound.? My dad brought it home when I was about 12 years old, (long time ago- abt 1962).? That got traded in for a brand new cherry Gibson SG and Silvertone Amp with Reverb, an abt 1965-66.? That guitar and Amp ended up in a pawnshop in New York City, in 1967, for money to get to San Francisco, Haight Ashbury, after going to the famous March on the Pentagon (Oct. 67).? My girlfriend who travelled with me had a very rare and expensive hollowbody? Guild with about 10 push button tone swiches.? I have never actually seen one since, not even in a photo, but supposedly John sebastian of the 'Lovin' Spoonfull' had one.? That guitar is beside? the point but I thought I would mention it.? Between that time and 1974 I had (at different times) a Gretch Tennesee-an (however you spell it)? an SG Custom with extended neck, a brand new Les Paul Custom (1974)(I was looking at a vintage Mossrite Ventures style and I wish I would have got that one instead. That was a really cool guitar.? ?I hardly got a chance to play the Les Paul before leaving the country and leaving the guitar behind. Honestly one of my FAVORITE guitars was a small classical style guitar with steel strings that I bought in a shop in a Mexican border town in about 1971.? They were asking $40 and I didn't have that much but I got the price down to about $28. and I travelled with that guitar for months and played it alot. I loved it.? Between that and the Les Paul (if I would have had it then) I think I would have been playing the $28 guitar about 75% of the time.? I remember that Les Paul being pretty heavy too. I had talent as a guitar player/musician but my lifestyle was too adventurous to settle down in one place and make anything of it.? I was always on the move it seemed and around by 1975 I had set my sights on education, pursued that intensively, and a profession so I did not play guitar much at all after that.? Intermittantly I would get a used guitar somewhere and play for a few months before somehow forgetting about it and being too busy with other things. In 1999 I went on full medical disability, (LOW INCOME)? for a chronic illness (HCV).? In 2000, I became obsessed with BLUES I've always loved blues guitar (and the late 60's classic rock stuff)? so I decided that studying/playing/writing/composing? is what I want to do with the rest of my life. It's that simple.? This is all I want to do. I feel like I may have missed my calling as a guitarist/musician when I was younger but lifes experiences otherwise have added much to my perspective, and really my objective is to create good music, write/compose.? Performing would be too demanding, so that is not my objective at present.? I? must say that I am obsessed with this so needless to say, I am serious about it. Here is what I have,? given my low budget, I save money for stuff and do the best I possibly can. Continental Tricone Style II, resonator, hand made, Germany,? used;? $1500 (had to save money for that one)? I bought this guitar because of my fascination for bottleneck and blues.? I did alot of research and this is the best I could do! Fender Squier Stratocaster. New: $99.? This is my second Squier Strat and I think it's great. It's alot of fun to play and when they are set up properly they're fine for my purposes.? The first one was made in Indonesia.? They have very good wood over there, same in China.? Yeah, some of the electronic? parts are cheap, no big deal, it plays like a fender.? The second one is Chinese.? It has the Fender neck of course, which is? what I wanted it for.? It actually plays just fine for my purposes.? $99 was just about every penny I had to spend that monthy with enough left over for gas to get home.? In my opinion if you put a great guitarist behind a Squier Strat, most people would never know the difference, now would they? Fender Squier Precision Bass, white, Made in Japan? $150 This is one of the first issues, made in Japan and it is awesome! It has the original strings on it still and it plays PERFECT. I am very happy with it!? Ampeg Rocket Bass, B-50R Amp? This is a fine sounding bass amp and I got a SUPER deal on it at a pawn shop that was running a 1/2 price sale. They may have made a mistake in pricing this one, which is like brand new, and? allowing me to walk out the door with at for $130, but I am very happy with it and would be very happy even at twice that price.? Jay Turser JT-134DC Blue? This has been one of my favorites.? The pickups have been changed out from the original humbuckers to Demarzio Air Norton pups and? it sounds really good. You can see on this page- it is the BLUE one, second one down:? http://www.jayturser.com/jt-jazz_box.htm? ?I bought it used with the original humbuckers included for $200. I think this is going to be one of my favorites for playing blues, but I may need to juggle some pick-ups later on (with all my electrics) to get the sound I want. Epiphone Gibson G400 This evidently is one of the older ones and I Love it. It feels virtually exactly the same as my original Gibson SG, I like the neck, body? and the cutaways and I think this will eventually be my favorite slide/bottleneck electric guitar. The hardware rather sucks really, also the pick up switch.? I am going to upgrade the hardware and electronics to the best I can get.? Other than that, this seems to be a good quality instrument.? When I am done with it, I think it will be better than an 'off the shelf' Gibson SG.? ?I am so fond of it because it reminds me of my first electric guitar.? I bought it from a neighbor for $150. Standel Custom 15 Amp This is a 1971 amp. the fancier of that model. It? originally came with a 15" JBL speaker,? and was a? very lucky find.? Standel Amps were very popular for use in recording studios? and they were a couple of years ahead of both Fender and Gibson in innovations.? This is solid state, but is probably the closest you will ever find to the sound of a Tube amp. This amp? is in great cosmetic condition but I don't have an appropriate speaker for it. The 15 inch speaker I was given with it, seems to be shorted out.? In any case parts are still available for this amp and it will be well worth fixing, so that is another project. Cost: $80. at a yard sale.? The guy had not considered selling it, but I spotted it in his garage, he had too many projects going, asked how much money I had and that totalled $80, so that is what I got it for. Here is a picture of two Custom 15s. Mine is identical but 1971 vintage, one year newer.? I have hopes of using thins one for recording: http://www.larrybell.org/id40.htm CRATE GX20M practice amp? This is like new, paid $45 for it.? All I can say is that it is better than no amp at all, and I needed a practice amp on a low budget so this is the best I could do.? It's OK for a practice amp. Ariel Acoustic Made in Japan, I got it for free in damaged condition (broken tuner, no nut, missing bridge pins, etc.? I did a good job of fising it up set it up with high action for playing slide, and with Martin strings it sounds really good.? Total investment about $25. I don't have any other guitar stuff, no effects and what I need most right now as far as effects is a good wah pedal.? That has to wait until I can get enough money which is going to be awhile. I got a $177 speeding ticket last week, 35mph in a 20mph zone, I did not slow down for the sign quick enough for that cop.? It may have been my long hair, but in any case I'll be broke for a couple of months. OH shit, I almost forgot.? I had a Vintage 1969 Les Paul Custom Studio BASS about 2-3 years ago and I GAVE IT AWAY, FREE to a Bass Player in Memphis, who I'd never met, but I had met his mother. Man, I will probably never see one of those again, but I do trust that it went to a good home.? I also have a 12 string acoustic I left in Calif. something like an Ovation, can't remember the make. I know my stuff is not very? 'hot' but this is the best I could do with my very limited financial means, and this has been? 5 years to accumulate this stuff. Since my objective is just writing/composing rather than performing I don't need alot of fancy expensive stuff anyway. I save and window shop and do the best I can do. Man, I make alot of typo errors, and I don't have the time or patience to fix them after a long post Phangeaux ? ? ?

I have a 50 watt Marshall Mark II, from 76 I believe, and a '74 4x12. Also a Dean Markley combo 30 watter.
Agile "les paul" Peavey "tele" which is the best 200 dollar guitar I have ever played thru. I've had it for 10 years, and I still love it. I have a Takamine Jasmine acoustic, and a washbuen acoustic. The Jasmine smokes the Washburn. And it was 80 bucks. I have several other rinky dink pawnshop guitars, nothing special, a few K's and some othe odd shit here and there. I sold a lot of my junk on Ebay... HA HA, I bought this OLD Domino acoustic from an antique store for 50 bucks... I took it out of the case once, and it was crap. It would not hold tune at all. I had my friend put it on Ebay, and I made almost 800 bucks on it!!!! HA HA HA. That was awesome.

It amazes me what *guitar collectors* will pay for old junk, and how much they think that old junk is worth. I used to get a laugh out of it. . Another thing that cracks me up is the so-called *investors* those who buy guitars as *investments* When the economy goes belly-up they will be stuck with a bunch of guitars that they have kept locked up, that they can't sell and worse, they may not know how to play. It is hard to get a good deal in auctions on a cheap fixer upper guitar these days because of collectors and investors always bidding on them. I had hoped to find a decent Japanese made Les Paul copy to fix up and make a good guitar out of it, but can't compete with these asshole collectors who bid on EVERYTHING. I really don't like those assholes at all. Maybe I should scavenge up some junk, call if "Vintage" and sell it at auction to 'collectors/investors only' so I could get enough extra money to beat them out on a bid for a dang fixer upper Les Paul copy. Electric Guitars:
79 les paul deluxe 2006 fender american deluxe strat homebrew strat I bought that someone else made.83 body and 2002 maple neck with HSH pickup config. After playing this hombrew strat for a while I was inspired to build my own which is: 1986 american strat body, mighty mite compound radius neck, evo2 bridge pickup, breed neck pickup (both DiMarzio), locking trem. This is all I play now and I love the sound of it as well as the degree to which it responds to the volume knob. It is wired for volume knobs only (one fr each pickup) - and no tone knobs. Amp: Peavey JSX 212 combo. (I'll just say that anyone looking for a combo for rock tone and versatility may want to check this amp out...I love it). Effects: MXR phase 90 Fulltone deva vibe Boss DD-20 delay Morley power wah A/DA flanger Acoustic: Seagull M6 gloss which I love but wish it had a cutaway. I may trade in one of my strats for a good acoustic with a cutaway.... not sure. Bass guitar: frankenstein jazz bass I picked up cheap on craigslist. Mighty mite neck and SX body. Looks good, plays well and has fender pickups with upgraded pots. Real quiet (free of hum), no fret buzz, nice tone. I'm real happy with it. Not a bass player but I need to fake it sometimes for recording. I'm real happy with my rig. Only hole in it that I can see now is that I'd love to have a nice acoustic with a cutaway for leads - preferably one with a neck that feels like an electric. I've tried ovations that I like for this. Although it's somewhat of a sacrifice in tone relative to say, a comparably priced taylor .... if the neck and action is such that I can play it better then that consideration wins out for me every time. I'd probably use the pickup for leads anyway... not really sure about that though. Last edited by Charlie_M : 05-03-2007 at 02:07 PM. |
