Default What do you think about the Peavey 6505+ Head?

Honestly, I've had one for about a year, and im not really sure what all the fuss is about.

Yeah, it's loud and has alot of gain, but it doesn't sound THAT great, and the clean on is SUCKS BALLS.

Any different opinions?

Never been a fan of the Peavey amps. I used to have one, but it just sounded so fake I had to get rid of it.

That amp is essentially a Peavey 5150. It's meant to be played loud and dirty. If you need to clean it up a bit, roll off the guitar volume. If you need a Fender type clean, my advice is buy a used Fender Deluxe Reverb RI and an AB box (Whirlwind is my favorite). You can switch back and forth between the two.

You don't know how to mic it or set the eq, period. The 5150 has been used on more recordings than you can count without passing out.

If you think your cleans are iffy, get a 12AT7 and put it on the clean channels preamp slot.

Get a Ibanez TS7- its forty bucks. gain on nearly 0, tone and level on 5 (12 o clock). Run this in front of the amp.

Distortion settings: (number, not clock face)

Pre-6
Low-6
Mid-2
High-4
Post-2
Resonance 6
Presence 7

Any Celestion V30 equipped cabinet, find the best speaker (with your ears, they all sound drastically different, trust me) mic it on the crease of the dustcap and cone with a SM57/SM58/Audix i5/Sennheiser 421MD/Shure SM7 (if you're daring).

If it doesnt sound good, its the player, the gear, or the room. You shouldn't have to do much to a guitar tone EVER to get it to work right. The source is what counts.

Not trying to be blunt, but I might as well get straight to the point.

I dunno man, I'll play with that. I wasnt really talking about recording either I just meant in general.

Im still kinda young and I guess its recent that I actually started thinking about my tone. Before that i would just play and not really care what it sounded like.

It just sounds to me like that amp is outta control. Really loud, but just nuts. I had a dimarzio deactivator put in my ibanez and it would just feedback most of the time.

we'll see.

You put a high power pickup into a guitar that you plug into a high gain amp. If you have the gain maxed and the pickup volume maxed, I can see why you're getting mostly feedback from the amp. Back off the gain and roll back the guitar volume until you can get control of the of the sound.

+1, but not about rolling off guitar volume. I recommend keeping guitar volume on full 90 percent of the time. The gain on the head should be no higher than 6 unless you're doing some crazy stuff. The pickup could be prone to feedback as well.
