Default Telecaster question

Hey guys. I am thinking of selling my American Tele. So....what is the best way for determining value and selling it? How do I find the specs on it to. I have been playing it for 12 years and my old man bought it new in 1993ish. The only info I can find on it is that it is a 1992 - 1993 model. Anyone know how to decode the serial number or do they not make a lot of sense.

Serial # N2 927701

Pay for an appraisal?
Local music store consignment?
Guitar Center? (Trade)
Ebay?

What about specs??? I am not a technical guitar person.
Neck is a light color wood. Pine??
Dark blue, I don't think it is as dark as midnight blue?
Original pickups??? single coil, Lipstick pickup?

Anyhow, it is a nice playing guitar, but doesn't fit my style just right. I am trying to get a modern rock/punk sound. And it just seam to twangy for me.
I know part of my problem is my amp - fender Deluxe 85. Solid state. I'm NOT too into Jazz, classic rock, country sound.

On the other end of the equation, I need to find a new guitar that fits. I know I will have to play them to hear them, but can someone push me in the right direction. I'm open to all opinions. Or maybe give me their buying/selling experiences.

Oh yeah, I think I am going to get a mesa express 5:50 for the amp.

Thanks for any help.

Mike

What I understand...N2=Ninty2.
The neck is maple not pine.
Single coils not lipstick.

If you aren't into the sound...why???
I personally like Teles but I wouldn't make some of my friends play 'em.

You know it plays really good. feels good, solid. I just don't like the sound I get out of it. I think it is mainly due to my amp. 85 watt solid state. Distortion sounds like FUZZ ahhhhhh, clean reverb sounds OK. I used to think it sounded OK, but since I started getting into this recording stuff, I have grown disappointed with it. I've played it through a few other amps and it sounded much nicer. I think I need to take it with me next time I go test out some amps and make a better decision that way.

I was just thinking that if I went in and bought an amp and guitar, I could get a hell of a deal. But maybe I am just getting carried away.

Truth is I don't even know where to start in looking at a new guitar.

This makes no sense. Why don't you off the amp?! Half empty out your wallet trading guitars and still not have a serviceable sound? Madness! I am constantly finding cool/weird old used tube amps at this GC or that. That's the recipe to fix this situation. If their price seems high, tell them so and make a deal.
Weird things I've found were old Traynors, Ampegs (amazing!) and who can remeber all what else.

Keep the guitar. You won't get a lot for it and you'll be real sad when it's gone.

I would send a detailed description of the guitar to Elderly Instruments. They will tell you (1) how much they would offer you for it, (2) how much they would sell it for, (3) what you would get if you left it on consignment. There is no obligation for this service. I have used Elderly for years and found them to be honest and excellent . Check them out on the web or give them a call. Elderly Instruments - Welcome - Elderly Instruments

I've owned a Tele since 1992. Love it. What's nice about a Tele is you can play around with them..change P/U's, change bridge, etc.

A good source I use is the Telecaster Forum... Telecaster Guitar Forum - guitars, gear, amps and strings
