I'm not sure what "the effect" you are speaking of. Is there a specific part of the song you're referring to, or are you talking about the different guitar sounds throughout the song?

The intro of the song uses a backwards, reversed effect.

There are many layered guitar tracks (if this is what you mean). The huge power-chord guitars have been double-tracked. That is, recorded on two different tracks, each panned to the hard left and right channels.

I'm not fully experienced on Linkin Park's live show, but I've spent 5 minutes on YouTube checking out their live performance of this song.

It seems that the 'backwards' intro is produced by an outside source. That is to say that it is most likely generated by an audio engineeer offstage or by a sampling keyboard onstage.

Either way, it is physically impossible to generate a backwards effect in real time. The backwards effect must have been produced ahead of time, recorded to an audio track, then reproduced by a band member or an offstage engineer with a sampler of some sort on cue.

This part of the song was recorded in the studio, reversed, and the resulting audio is played back in a live concert situation.

I hope we're talking about the same part of the song...
