Hey guys, I am new to this site, but am not new to forum boards. I understand the search button and how much it can help others from wasting there time with a bunch of the same posts. but anyway, i have searched this forum and i need some help. I am new to home recording. I have been playing guitar for 10 years (since i was 11) when i searched, i am all confused because i don't know what direction i should be going in. I want to record vocals and guitar onto my computer and put on CD. I want it to sound pretty good and not full of static noise. I do have a budget, 500$ is what i want to keep it at. i have read about those "system in a box" units for home recording. What do you recommend for me to get started. Thanks for your time, Jason |

| Get Started With Home Recording is a good read. Home Recording Gear Help For Songwriters will also help. When it's time to choose an audio interface, check out my Home Recording Soundcard Wizard in my signature. If you have any questions, just let us know. Brandon |

I am currently running my guitars, drums and mics through a 12/4 mixer, analog, by way of the alt 4 bus to my Audigy 2zs soundcard front inputs. I have been successful at getting clean and powerful audio to the pc and use two programs for mastering, Magix Music Studio 11 or 12 and Cakewalk Music Creator 3 or 4. Most important elements seem to be the mixer, and the sound card. I also use a Boss Micro BR for some recording and a super little program to pull the recording from the BR without the tedium of mastering in the little devil. If this site permits pictures, I can upload pics of the my little studio. Otherwise let me know if my experience in success or failures can be of help. I am in the hunt for a USB 2.0 mixer (Alesis?). This permits multi input to pc as Firewire did, (though my desktop has firewire, my laptop does not).

I went with the Zoom HD16CD which is nice but $699. I think you can get the 8 track on your budget. Zoom is made in Japan and I had never heard of them until I asked another recording engineer. They are well made and come with a CD burner and 80G hard drive. I tried to keep it simple in one unit but it does come with Cubase if you want to learn to use your computer along with it. Good luck.
