Thumbs up I found my tone

I own a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe and ive been messing around with the tone contols for a long time searching for a great sound. I finally found a great tone.

My settings were as follows:
Treble = 8 1/2
Bass = 10 1/2
Middle = 6 but just slighly past the 6
Presence = 6 1/2
Normal Bright = On

I stuck an sm57 on the amp and just about anywhere I placed the mic I got a great tone. It really does start with the source. I just want to make note that I believe the reason I got such a good tone has more to do with me not cranking up the presence knob than getting the eq settings right. The presence right In the middle sounds sounds really natural and the best for me recorded. Try these settings out even if you dont own the amp and don't crank the presence knob. Tell me what you think. Does anybody else spend a lot of time tweaking their amp settings?

This is what happens when the tone is good. I think many beginners like to move the mic around like it's some kind of magic tone saver. Mic placement certainly effects the way the tone is captured. However, it's never made a terrible tone sound incredible.

ha ha ha ha ha hahah a ha

This is practically ALL I do. I'd say there is a 10:1 or maybe 20:1 ratio in regard to amount of time spent working the amp : amount of time on mic placement.

To me a good amp is going to sound good no matter what the controls are at.(not including the presence) I would never buy an amp if it took me longer than a minute to dial in a tone. I can dime out all my eqs and my marshall is still the same beast. I can keep everything at 12'oclock so on and so forth. Now I can tweak my controls and fu#k with my gain and volume knobs and get a variety of older marshall tones. Angus, slash EVH, billy gibbons.etc but the true test is when you put that amp alongside another amp and a raging drummer (like the one i have) and be able to keep the volume at level 3 and still being able to cut through the mix. Good to hear that you found your niches in the tonal world
