i prefer the softer realistic all acoustic source

eitehr ours or the one next door
And that, of course, is your right.

So far (I've still only recorded 7 songs at this stage), I've used my amp on all my recordings. At first I used a SM57, but after a brief shootout I found I prefer the sound I'm getting from a dynamic mic that came with a drum mic set that I picked up on the cheap (made by Eagle, don't know the part numbers). So far I've gotten pretty good reviews, so I'm happy...
Of course, all my guitar parts are for punk songs with lots of distortion. I may be trying something a bit different soon for a radio contest here in Ireland (must get a move on if I've any chance of beating the deadline), so maybe I'll have to change tactics then... I'll keep ye posted

So I should create as much music as I can, while its tax free and unregulated? Be it by means of a real amp or a simulated one, regardless, I should just play, while I can. Maybe if I wasnt a middle class musician and perhaps a rich class one, possibly might I still be free to create without taxation or regulation? Its the peoples music.

Cheers
Unfortunately it involves recording a U2 cover, so my hands might fall off in disgust...
Maybe I'll just do the Johnny Cash version, I'll feel much better then

You know what? I've just checked the station's website for the details, and there's no mention of any prize, although they claim this year's competition (3rd year running) will be bigger than ever... intriguing
I guess the prize is honour, maybe? More likely it'll be studio time in Windmill Lane or somewhere like that...
Some equipment would be nice though

I've heard emulators that sounded more real than poorly recorded real amps.
This is part of the conclusion I've come to after playing around with and listening to other people's and all that stuff. A sim track will never completely wash out and suck. It will always be at least OK. It'll never be brilliant, either. A miked track has all the room in the world to be just awful all the way to amazing. Hey, sometimes predictable mediocrity is just the right thing for the situation when its falling into a steaming heap can't be an option.

This brings up a bigger issue to me. Seldom do I listen to music with amazing tones.

For example, yesterday I listened to the 2006 AFI record. I love the album and there is nothing wrong with the engineering but there is nothing I'm going to run off and show my buddies. I already posted how Madonna drums pounded way harder than the AFI drums on that record.

You can see this point over and over and over. Tones change from album to album. You may love the drums on this album and the guitars on that album, but none of that really matters. That's just the extra stuff as long as the production isn't distracting. That extra stuff is like all the junk on the walls at restaurant. I go to a restaraunt to fulfill my raging fatass disease, not to look at crap on the wall. I listen to music because it makes me feel good, not because some asshole want an engineering grammy.
