The best trick I know is to use Pre-Distortion EQ. I am speaking about EQ in the recording studio and not live use, but have found that a high quality graphic or parametric running between the Guitar and amp contributes much more effectively than the tone knobs on the amp. the key is to find an eq that doesn't contribute noise/hiss to the sound. i stay away from the cheap eq pedals for this reason ( i refer to them as hiss pedals ). I get the coolest results from using an inexpensive Alesis graphic eq in front of my head when i'm recording guitars. you can really dial in the right tone.
