Default Guitar Cab Mics

Everyone I've asked told me to shove a Sm-57 in front of the cabinet and it'll work perfectly. So just as I was about to purchase one I came upon the Sennheiser e609 Silver Dynamic Guitar Microphone. The review say it surpasses the SM-57 with fuller rich tone and also the Sennheiser evolution e906 Dynamic Guitar Amp Microphone. Can someone who maybe have these mics tell me which one is better?

None are better, just more expensive. They each give a different sound response, sometimes a brighter sound, sometimes a muffled sound, sometimes hollow, sharp, crisp, and any other adjective you can think of.

Start simple, Shure sm57 or 58, or even an Audio-Technica. Really mess around with this 1 mic trying on and off-axis placement. Distance and also read the shootouts on this forum. Once you know the type of sound you are looking for, then shop around.

I personally like the Nady RSM5 ribbon mic, and also the Shure Beta 58.

I use the Sennhieser E 609 (not silver)
I'm not sure what the difference is between the two other than the price (the silver is less expensive)

I personally like the E 609, I use it in combination with a beta 56, ot a sm57.

I cant complain, I manage to get the sound I'm after.

YMMV

i like the SM57 on higher gain tones, i like the E609 on tweedier tones.

i like the Royer 121 on everything, but that is a whole other kettle of fish price-wise.

For example I'm going for a heavy sound for distortion a type of Lamb of od sound and for clean a very plexi sound, could the Senheier work for that?

well, I would say that if your amp has the tone you are looking for, then yes this would be a good mic.

But, if your amp doesn't have this tone to begin with, no mic on the market will make it happen.

that would be like making orange juice out of tomatoes.

I have a sm57/58,(same mic, one was born 1957 w/a cylindrical head, and the other in 1958 w/a spherical head)an e609 and a Sam Adams in front of me right now,and I cant get good results from neither one(as far as the mics go).
I've tried at least 1001 placements for each, and in combinations.
I'm starting to think its the room? Maybe a lower ambient room could make the difference.

It may be as basic as the amp. Does it sound awesome in when you play it?? Because I know for sure that a microphone cannot create a Lamb of God Guitar Tone. I don't like my guitar sound, but I accept it because I have a $30 amp and I can't play guitar. When it is a struggle to get the sound coming out of the amp right, then its pretty much trouble right away. Why don't you post a sample? We can pretty easily rule in/out the room by hearing it.

It sounds like you tried recording with your current mics. If you just play something that you normally would play for your style of music, record, and post that, we can help you out.
