I've got a Fender Frontman which gets a very credible Fender sound - I stuff it under my desk and wrap a blanket around it, that way I can get the volume up without shaking down the house. I've used as sm57 on the Frontman and other musicians had no idea what I'd used - but it sounded good. Considering getting a similar size baby Marshal to get their sound. Also need to try out the Nady Ribbon mic I've got - soon as the new pre-amp arrives to run that thing.

The Epiphone valve jnr is cheap as chips. I run mine through a 1x12" cab and the sound is big.

I have a Carvin Belair 212 and love it. As other people mentioned though, it needs to be turned up to bring out the sound. I hate "processed" guitar and am toying with the idea of a Roland cm 30, and then running the voiced cabinet out to record. I ordered the Roland as it will be put to use either way.

Just bought a Blackstar Series One 45 combo. It has a speaker emulated output for recording. Initial impressions have put a big smile on my dial. As does the amp in any of it's many configurations. Awesome bit of gear.

Has anyone tried one of the 1/2 watt amps or kits on the market? My Valve Junior is still too loud to crank in a small environment, and really doesn't approach the feel of a great amp. The .5 watt idea seems like a great idea, but you pretty much have to buy one to try it out.

I've had some great compliments on the recording capabilities of my Traynor YCV20. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't have a need for high-gain.

+1 on the Roland Cube 30x

-just killer model of the JC sound, passable replications of Fender, Marshall and a slightly fizzy version of a Mesa. Sweet Roland chorus, delay, 'verb - if you use the later 2 in moderation

line out, dead quiet background (no hiss), light & easy on the 'ol back to transport, built like a tank, reliable, plenty loud enough to keep up with my drummer at practice

+1 on the Blues Jr.

other candidates that record well (IMHO)

Mesa Studio 22

Fender Tweed Champ (or many of the clones)

for a 6V6 tone I'll use a black-faced Bassman head (which also works damn well for bass! (horrible gigging amp for bass, but has a great tone for recording)

For pedal Steel I like the Mesa Rocket 440 (or a Fender Super Reverb)... nothing like real spring reverb!

my 2 cents
