what do you mean? Do you want to know how to decide what chords to use? How to notate them? How to play them? What's the question?

We are talking about music, correct? Are you sure there are any rules to ANY aspect of it?

Just asking because I happen to be pretty sure there are no rules in music.

Well, maybe one suggestion: If it sounds right, then it probably is.

Holy crap man... music theory is a huge topic. It's not something that can be answered in a single forum post. Despite what Vulcanizer says, there are rules in music. Among other things, they define genre.

He is right in a way though - if it sounds good, it is. And at the end of the day, rules go out the window if you want to do something else. They are more guidelines rather than rules.

In order to get a grasp on what chords to use, its a good idea to study the genre of music that you're interested in writing. Try and break down songs into chords, rhythms etc, and figure out why they sound the way they do. It's a long job, it's a brain taxing job, but it'll make you a better musician, and it'll probably help to make sense of what you end up writing.

What genre of music do you want to write?

Yep. I was taking it to an extreme, I admit, richiebee. It was done just in an effort to get across that point.

I don't worry about what chords other folks think I should be playing. I mess around until I find the ones I want to hear, BUDFREAK.

Maybe knowing the rules would make it easier to find that chord. Maybe it wouldn't. I'm not sure, to be honest.

richiebee has given you some good advice, it appears to me. Get some songs by bands you really like that play in the style you want to play in. Sit down, listen to 'em and figure out what they are doing. Try getting your hands on Guitar Player magazine too. They have all sorts of music theory from beginner to shredder.

Can't hurt.
