Default axe fx?

i did a search on here for the axe fx and got no results, so i decided to post one myself.

has anyone on here tried this unit yet? theres a forum dedicated to it and the guys over there are all giddy over the thing.

the reviews and word of mouth are very impressive. unfortunatly its hard to go by word of mouth when buying a device like this, it being brand new and all. they have no dealers either as far as i know. there are a bunch of reviews on youtube where everybody says that this thing is every bit as ****, responsive and chunky as a real tube amp. the effects as well are apparently at the eventide level.

but there all reviews with guys playing in there bedrooms playing at bedroom levels, being recorded with their digital cameras. and the quality of sound in these recordings is very poor. well, what do you expect from a youtube video?

I got an AxeFX Ultra over the weekend from their distributor Tone Merchants here in Orange, CA (great guys to deal with). The unit is sick. Plain and simple, sick sick sick.

I've been playing 16 years, as I said over on Jemsite, I'm not a tone snob OR a tube snob. I use whatever I think will get the job done. Be it digital, analog, modeling, hybrid, whatever. This thing is amazing.

I know it's word of mouth, I know it's a shitload of money (at least for me it was) but it is WELL worth it. I've tried numerous software emulators (guitar rig, studio devil, and a whole bunch more that I can't remember the names of) and was in the market for something I could replace my amp with (Carvin V3). I liked the carvin and all, but I live in a small condo and the neighbors weren't too keen on me cranking my amp.

So I stumbled across all the software VST emulators and like I said, I liked their sound and the variety of sounds I got from them. So then it started to make sense to get rid of the amp and go direct only.... so I researched the usual suspects, the Boss GT-10, the X3 Live, gt2.99tt, and the Utopia G300 and they all seemed viable in one way or another. Multi-effects so I could practice with no latency, maybe throw them in an amp mix somewhere down the road, but would basically get the job done.

Then I stumbled across the AxeFX. So I read up on it, read the manual front to back (before even buying it), read the Fractal forums for a bit and noticed something about their firmware upgrades. What I noticed is, they come out OFTEN and they don't just fix screw ups, they actually IMPROVE the sounds and options available in the unit.

That, coupled with some well known artists using the units AND all the clips I could get made me think that yeah, this unit could finally do it all (for me). And I'm glad I sold my one remaining lung to buy the Ultra.

It's worth every penny, even if I have to breathe with the help of a machine at this point. I like to fuck around in all styles of music so I want to be able to cover (or attempt to) the sounds of the guys I like (satch, vai, petrucci, etc) and at the same time pull of ambient drug rock stuff like old school Verve, surf instrumental ala Los Straitjackets, old school thrash like Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica (pre 90'), etc. This box does it all and not just half assed.

It seems there's always somewhere in these devices where they skimp. They skimp on the box itself, or they skimp on this effect, or that effect or this amp model, etc. This thing just seems like finally someone said NO to the skimping and actually made something from the ground up that kicks ass.

Anyway, that's my take on it. It's a tweak-heads paradise but beware that there MAY be a learning curve with the unit and it may not do all the things YOu want it to do. But for me, it does everything and then some.

Great to hear that. I got my standard about a month now. Worth every penny. Since I got it, it's keeping me away from a lot of things. The only thing I do now is work, and play with my standard.

I've tried the AxeFX standard, We're actually using it to record a demo right now! Great piece of gear, a must for those who can afford it. A buddy of mine is using it live as well as in the studio, so it is a very versatile instance once you can use it. I specially like the clean tones you can get out of it, they're nothing short of immense. I'm saving up for the ultra myself, but I guess that'll take some years with my underpayed job. Oh well, some day....
