Affordable Acoustic Guitar?

Im looking into buying a guitar in the $300 to $400 range. I want an acoustic/electric that would sound good live as well as in the studio.

As of now I have my eye on a takamine.


Suggestions?

Washburn makes some good acoustics in that price range.

Laguna, try Lagunas. A small bit more than your price, but not much.

Oh man, I had one of those. It was black and it had the richest tone I've ever heard. Nice and thick, whole-sounding. I had it modded with a better bridge and lowered the action on it so it played easier. It beat my $2,000 Martin every time.

I sat in a guitar shop for a few hours playing 6 or so guitars $300-600, I walked out with an Alvarez AD70SC. A Yamaha was a close 2nd.

I would pardon a sidetrack for a moment, but how are the Guild holding-up in comparison nowdays ?
I'm about to take a plunge on one - just acoustic. Are the mahogany too **** (dead).

For the money - Morgan Monroe is offering some great guitars. Rosewood sides and back and solid spruce tops, decent tuning machines and great finishes

They also employ the same X-Bracing design that is found on Martin guitars.

They also have a lower cost line called Creekside - these are great utility instruments that when properly set up will fool you into thinking you're playing a much more expensive guitar.

I turned of friend of mine on to these who owns a music shop - he's now a dealer for the whole Morgan Monroe Creekside line.


For what it's worth, I have a vintage Martin and a vintage Gibson - yet if I were to go looking for a new guitar, I'd grab one of these.

Hmm, I have an old Gibson and a (relatively) new Martin. I might give the Morgan's a shot.
