On the whole I really liked it. Your efforts have paid big dividends!

Now I'll try to sound like a know it all even though I know so very little.

The main vocal is nicely controlled, has good intonation, but lacks any depth. If you aren't already studying with a competent vocal teacher, then I'd suggest taking a couple lessons. They can show you some exercises to help you open up your voice. There are also some self-help programs, books as well. If none of that suits you then just experiment on your own.

The bg vocals are a little heavy and kind of stab your ears out when they come in. Maybe put them up an octave? Maybe try singing them with a more breathy tone, akin to a whisper, and less bite.

The bass sounded really hollow. It has lots of attack and so the line is clearly articulated, but I think you want a more rounded sound with this composition. Try it centred as the author above suggested. That may also help.

Thanks VM.
I hope to find time soon to digest and implement everyone's suggestions. It will be a while, but look for a re-mix down the road. Thanks to all who have replied.

I agree with the dry vocals comments above. Get some echo on the mic, back off and sing out.

Also, Isn't the AW16g a Yamaha... not a Sony? (I know b/c I have an AW16g)

Thanks, oldmusicguy. I appreciate your comments as well as the others'. I look forward to reworking this thing, though it could be weeks before I find the time to focus on it. I should be at work now!
Yes, the aw16g is a Yamaha machine.

I know - one mans wine etc... but to me his has real charm and character. Forget the recording technique for this one - as a 'listening' experience this is almost perfect for the song itself...a lonely, self searching, sorrowful song really brought home and (bear with me) enhanced by this production version...

It kind of reminds me of some of Leonard Cohens very first efforts (which are, by the way, regarded as masterpieces now) - that also have the same kind of 'vulnerable' quality about them....not perfect, far from it, but still beautiful in their own way...

Remember - its the 'whole' song and its target that we are talking about here - not just a Trevor Horn production....

Best

Tony.

Thanks Tolo,
It's a recording forum and I'm new to, it so I don't discount the criticisms. To the contrary, I appreciate them and mean to understand them and learn from them. Still, I'm glad to hear from someone who seems to appreciate the overall feel I was going for.
