Default What Is This Feeling / 70's type rock

hi new member here. this is the last mix i did before downloading the books so i'm interested in the opinions of how i did before the books. i know i'll do better after. my 22 yr old son did the drums and i did the rest. yes a father song combo on a cool 70's ish rock song called "what is this feeling"

Welcome to the forum! Books or no books, sounds like you've got quite a solid handle on this recording thing - Great vocal & guitar work - especially the vocal harmonies. Mix sounds huge - pretty well balanced to my ears. The only slightly weak link in the chain is the drums - they sound a bit machine-like - particularly @ the intro fill. When you say your son "did" the drums, I assume he arranged them on a Vst instrument or similar midi device. They definitely need a more human feel to them (vary the velocities, randomize the beat so they swing a bit) & possibly the snare sound is a bit "modern" for the genre, but that might be a matter of taste. Excellent work - look forward to hearing more of your stuff.

wow nice catch. the drums were programmed by my son using samples of his actual drum set. he plays in a metal band so i agree with you that a 80's big hair band snare would have fit the song better. i sent him the song finished with a scratch drum track and he said he played along with the song on his kit and then programmed the drums to match what he would play if he was playing it live. so since we did the recording order back wards we couldn't use the swing or the drums wouldn't line up with the instruments. wow good ear to catch the drums. so thanks for listening and commenting

see if you can tell that the bass is actually a guitar track transposed down an octave

after reading the engineering book i see some of my mistakes. i didn't pick the snare that would be best for the song. i settled for what is good enough when i could have made some changes and made the mix great

Hi. This is my first post here, so here goes:

I like the tune and the performance.

One thing i noticed while listening (I used my headphones) is that there is a sort of high frequency sound that is going on almost like a constant buzz. At least in the verses. It might be the reverb on the high hat/cymbals that could use some taming. My experience in recording is limited, so it might be that this is something else entirely. Just thought I'd mention it. The sound seems to stop when the high hat is not in use. (During fills)

The fadeout is a little abrupt for my taste. You might want to fade out the drums a bit faster, since they seem to be strongest during the last fade.

These things are just details in a great performance, though

Nope, didn't pick that one! Of course, now that you've pointed it out, I could knowingly stroke my chin & say "I thought there was something strange about the bass", but I won't because I honestly didn't pick it. I'm not listening on a particularly bass-specific system, but if there are some missing sub-bass frequencies I'm not hearing, one suggestion I've heard is to use audio to midi (if your DAW has it) on the "bass" track & blend a sub-bass synth with your existing "bass" tone to beef it up.

Im busy ... so i'll make it quick .... I liked it BUT .... the mix could be better ....more snare on 2&4 with more snap .... better symbles needed ... back up vocals .to much same person ..need different voices ...2nd guitar solo much better then 1st one . .. move 2nd solo into 1st spot ... shorten song ...to repetitive ... definitly needs and ending ...Fade if nothing else ....But i kanda liked this song ...do what u think is right ....your the artist ....make your art .and stand by it ...good luck

well it seems that the drums are the weakist link or at least has the most problems. i think a complete re-mix is in order for the drums. when i had my son do the drums he sent me only one track and i need to get all the tracks so i can pick my own samples and do my own mix and fix the ending. as for changing anything else i'm ok with the rest and its just for fun anyway.
