Default Waiting for love

This is a remix of a song that I posted a while back when my mixing chops were much greener. Hoping for some feedback on mix, writing, etc. Will be posting some more old stuff as I am going to through a creative dry spell and need to fix a lot of the old stuff. Song is waiting for love at:

The reverb on this song is an old school sound, but the song itself is a bit old school so I guess that works.

There are parts where I wonder if the 12 string is fighting the vocals a bit in the uppermids somewhere.

The kick is a bit random for my tastes. Sometimes it's pretty loud and other times you can't even hear it. I come from a more modern era where the kick is more prominant.

Lastly, this is what I call 70s pop music and I subtract 10 points (not very many) from all 70s pop songs simply because my mom loves this era in music.

Overall, I think you've done an excellent job. I like how the vocals are up front and the song is good (for my mom's era).

Brandon. I think that you hate to love this song. Just a few questions. You say that the reverbs are old school. What would make them sound more contemporary? Also I suppose I should compress the kick more to make it poke out?

Well for modern music, the reverb is seldom so obvious. It's not like it's 2000 and 90% of vocals are bone dry, but reverb is definitely done in moderation. Your using a tactic from the old days where it was okay to obviously hear the reverb. In 2008 on recordings that sound "modern" you don't encounter this so much. At least I can't think of an example.

Think of "Sherry" by Journey. Steve Perry is singing all by his lonesome for the first several lines. It's nothing but him and a ton of reverb. If that was done today, that reverb wouldn't be there. Not like that.

Turn on the pop music station and it'll be obvious to you.

It needs to be said that this may not be the route that is most musically effective for your tune here.

Well, kinda. I'd start by just turning the kick up some. Then go from there. Compression in and of itself isn't going to make the kick peak out. It's still require some make-up gain of some kind.

My mom would love this song.
