Default take a picture.....

hey guys i kinda tripped on a song by filter. "take a picture". kinda love the instruments and the tambourines and the other stuff playing in that song so i decided to make a cover to learn more about recording and mixing. i used FLStudio for bass track, sequencing and recording, ezdrummer(standard kit) for drums, guitar rig2+kefir for guitar. thats all. can you guys give it a bash?? suggestions and comments would be greatly appreciated. thanks!!!!!!

This is a nice fat full sounding track.I have dfh in my studio but never use it on recordings just for songwriting or for a meter.I think if you pan off some of that tamborine/bongo percussion stuff hard l&r it will open the track up a bit. Also pan those guitars.Everthing sounds good just a little lifeless to much of a perfect drum meter no groove.I think the eq and mix are fine just spread out the mix a little more to give it air.Other than that this is a nice sounding track as is.Good Job!Sterling Sound Studios

I'm in agreement with rockerdude...Open up the track with a wider stereo spread. The tune has a lot of potential.

Nice,

Chico

yah i panned two of the bongo's hard left and right. and the dominant ones on the mids. i also panned the guitars hard left and 70 right. i guess it still didnt do it. i'll do all of your suggestions later. maybe the guitars arent that spread coz i used guitar rig for this and it doesnt give any much difference from left to right coz it's kinda too perfect unlike real amp recording that has more sound variations in it. i'l probaly use my live setup next time...or not if im too lazy...heheh. by the way i've seen your studio before rockerdude. are you the one on youtube. you have an x3 live too right?? and a variax?? correct me if im wrondg i'm an x3live user too. thanks man!!!!!

On the pan left and right, try using a different patch or even just different eq or drive settings for one of the tracks to add some air to it. I agree about the tempo being a bit too locked. Have you tried the humanize button yet? I just started working with EZD myself so I am not sure how much difference it makes.

I keep waiting for the vocal "Leggo my eggo, leggo my eggo, my toast is dead, so fuck this bread" or something like that.

This is definitely one of your better mixes and is executed very well. The mix is a bit dry for my tastes, I don't hear much verb on anything and it's a bit cloudy in the low mids. When you mix, start with your main beat keepers (kick snare bongo etc) and add instrument, cut/boost necessary frequencies and continue.

okay im still working on the track. i'll take on that. this is my first time mixing and editing waves on flstudio and it takin me long to get a grip on things. i apologize if the update is taking so long. i used cool edit before but i decided to switch to flstudio and study it. i have tried the humanize button in ezd but what it does for me is just humanize the velocities of the drum track. i still don't know how to humanize the tempo for flstudio. maybe some more research is needed.hehe. thanks bro!!!

thanks greg. yeah thats what i did on this track. beats first and then instruments. the only thing is.. i havent processed the individual tracks yet coz i'm still learning how to manipulate things on flstudio so the whole track posted here is in it's rawest stage. im still experimenting on eq'ing and reverbing in this program. major nube here bro.. i mean major nube..hehe. thanks for the tip greg!!! very much appreciated!!! cheers!!!!
