You're right, both sounds probably have their places in whatever song I decide to put them in. Here's an mp3 of a Wilco cover (Sunken Treasure) I recorded last week. I didn't use a click track as you will probably hear, but I was happy with the sound quality I got from my basement haha. I recorded the vocals and the acoustic together, then bass, drums, electric and backup vocals respectively. For some reason, I couldnt upload the mp3, so heres a link to myspace: MySpace.com - Joe Novak - Forest Park, Illinois - Jam Band / Acoustic / Pop - www.myspace.com/joenovakband |

Bring up your electric lead lines man. Maybe a little delay on them? Maybe pan them right or left. I like the VOX. Bring up the cymbal roll. Too much reverb on the kit for my taste. Reverb can destroy just as easy as it can help. More drums over all. Pan out your toms. Pan your overheads harder? if they aren't already. Maybe less acoustic in spots. I like this tune! This is great. |

Thanks! The overheads are panned 100% left to right respectively. I'll try and bring up the electric a bit and see how it sounds. I've been having some trouble trying to figure out how to give the drums more presence in the mix without having them peak. Any suggestions?

| You can use some compression to get rid of the stray peaks which leaves you more room to bring the overall level up. Also, just because a clip indicator goes off does not necessarily mean it is bad. If if sounds good go with it, despite what the electronics are telling you.

The electric is weak or thin, it sounds kinda like a toy to me. This can only be fixed by retracking it and turning it up more if you miked it, maybe fooling around with the mid and low knob a little. If you didn't mic it, then I suggest you go back and trying it. Can you put a high shelf on those overheads? They aren't cutting at all. I'd also suggest setting up the kit in a different way so that there will be more stereo imaging because I hear most of the cymbals on one side. If you have close mics on bass drum and snare then finding the root of the bass drum in a Parametric EQ and then finding that same note around the 1-4khz region while cutting the octave bellow will give the bass drum presence. The snare sounds extremely dry and low in the mix to me. Maybe cut out a something between 400-600, its extremely boxy. Vocals and acoustic guitar are perfect. Ben

I recorded the overheads(C1000s) in an XY pattern. I'll try a spaced pair next. Thanks for the tips! |
