I bought a few years back a mike similar to this model for my live gigs... Samson AirLine 77 Wind Instrument System (803.750 MHz) Close-Up | Sweetwater.com and works perfect for that... but not for studio work. Cheers! ![]() |

Yeah, clip ons are fine for live gigs, but not for recording. They create a hell of a noise through valve or key noise for starters.
Out of all the mics I've tried on trumpet (AKG C414, Neumann U87, Shure SM57, Shure Beta 57, Sennheiser MD441, Electrovoice RE-20), I settled on the EV RE-20 as the only one that gives me the sound I hear in my head. Very smooth. I find most condensers way too brittle. For me it was a toss up between the RE20 and the Sennheiser MD421 (couldn't justify the cost of the 441). I'm very happy with what I have. I tried the RE20 on cello the other night too alongside my regular choice, a C414. It was great, I'm glad I put it up. Positioning could have been better, but with musicians on the clock, its not for me to indulge my own curiosity on someone elses money. It just seems to get rid of any harshness in the playing. The only downside is the significant boost it needs from a pre-amp. It requires way more gain than any other mic I've used. Not really a problem with the Focusrite pre's I have at work, but not so great with the cheapies I have at home. |
