| well this will be my first recording ive posted. please tell me what you think. Its still missing some lead parts, mainly on the last section, it's only rythm. heres some of my questions: everytime another instrument comes in a new hiss comes with it. I dont have monitors to hear a good playback but is it really noticible? i dont want to use to much hiss reduction it seems to muddle the whole track when i do that. I havent found a good sound for the bagpipes yet. they still dont seem to sit with the rest of the mix yet, and are borderline annoying to me. although im used to bagpipe music by now. I know when i first heard a band called the Old Blind Dogs they drove me nuts but now i love it. If anyone is familliar with those guys do you have any ideas on how to get that sound they have of the pipes? thanks in advance for any critisism. |

Hi, This is my first post on this site, which I found through a google search so please excuse my lack on understanding about the site and forums. I am not sure how you are recording your bagpipe music, but Apple Garageband offers some really nice Bagpipe instruments in their supplemental World Jam Pack DVD. I hope this helps. The hiss is quite noticable, the intro banjo or whatever it is sounds a little out of place sound quite thin. I would bring the overall volume of the bagpipe down, maybe add a nice reverb (not too much) and give it some lower mids to fill it out. Playing seems pretty solid though.

The additive effect of hiss could be the result of a small amount of hiss on your input channels. Each time something else comes in via the same signal path, it accumulates. If so, try to find the source and kill it if you can. A lot of noise reduction can be quite destructive of the good sounds. I liken it to radiation therapy - some healthy cells get killed along with the bad. I have a Digitech bass multieffect pedal that is adding some his via it's wiring in a patch panel, giving me similar problems. Everything is pristine until the bass part. I think I'm going to unwire it from the PP and try it straight into my Presonus. The alternative is to use a VST amp simulator, and although it reduces the noise, it can eat up precious CPU cycles. Better to get the sound right b4 recording it. I thought this was pretty cool, and other than some EQ tweaking and level balancing is good to go.

Thanks for the reviews guys. yes i think my mikes could be sending some noise, i already quit using one of my shure sm57's becuase it really made a lot of noise. thats the next thing i need to put on my wish list, new mic's. I never use more than 2 at a time and i record everything with a mic, no other inputs, i want an all acoustical sound. any suggestions? Quote:
sm57 pointed at the 12th fret about 7 inches away and a dominion DS-V7 ( which is omnidirectional) behind the bridge about 7 inches away also. but for this particulaur recording i just pointed the DS-V7 towards the sound hole about 1 foot away. no particulaur reason for these models of mics, thats just all i have right now. It is likely not your mics that produce the hiss but what they are going into. I've heard some condensers pull some noise on phantom power but never a dynamic mic. Likely your mixer or interface?
